Humans are sensitive to ostracism, and even the observation of the exclusion of a thirdparty, triggers humans` social need to belong indicated by increased social affiliative behaviors. This sensitivity for ostracism can also be seen in children. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of ostracism on children's social motivation in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). In TRNC, children grow up in a collectivistic cultural context with a salient inter-group tension between Turkish and Greek Cypriots. This might cause specific effects of ostracism, since the threat of exclusion might be greater in the populations with higher inter-group tensions. The research questions are first, from which age children develop an understanding of third-party ostracism, and second, how the observation of third-party ostracism impacts children's social motivation in intergroup contexts. Therefore, 66 children (Mage=5.48 years; age range: 4- 7 years) of Turkish heritage were recruited. The children were either primed with thirdparty ostracism or with neutral videos. Hereafter, their explanations, mood ratings for the excluded agent's mood, and the children's own mood were assessed. Children's social inclusion behavior and social motivation were tested after the priming phase. While willingness of children to pass the ball with and preference to include in-group or out-group puppets were measured in the social inclusion task, children`s waiting preferences were measured in the social motivation task (social delay gratification). It was found understanding of ostracism increased with age. Social inclusion and social motivation outcomes did not differ between the two conditions.
