Background/Aims: Experiential avoidance is the attempts of averting from distressing emotions, thoughts and behaviors despite the possible psychological and physiological harm in the long run. This phenomenon has been associated with anxiety, health anxiety and gastrointestinal symptoms. The current survey study aims to investigate the association of experiential avoidance with particular patterns of anxiety and functional gastrointestinal symptoms. Besides, the role of experiential avoidance in relationship between anxiety (health and trait) and gastrointestinal symptoms is aimed to be assessed. Method: Self-report questionnaires were completed by 214 healthy Turkish participants in order to measure experiential avoidance, level of health anxiety, trait anxiety and gastrointestinal symptoms. Results: Experiential avoidance positively correlated with health anxiety and trait anxiety. The mediation analyses showed that experiential avoidance fully mediates the relationship between health anxiety and gastrointestinal symptoms. The relationship between trait anxiety and gastrointestinal symptoms are also found to be fully mediated by experiential avoidance. Conclusion: Experiential avoidance plays a key role in the mechanism of anxiety and gastrointestinal symptom relationship. Targeting experiential avoidance and adopting acceptance oriented treatment programs would contribute in treatment of anxiety and comorbid functional gastrointestinal disorders significantly.
