This study presents a descriptive analysis of the increasing cooperation between the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) and the Democratic Union Party (PYD) in the post-Syrian civil war context. Before the outbreak of the civil war, the relationship between the two groups seems to be limited to ideological affiliation and transactional cooperation. With the inception of the civil war, however, it seems the cooperation between the two groups has intensified. This study uses a qualitative case study to determine the changing incentives that facilitated the cooperation between PKK and PYD in the post-2011 period. The study tests three theories to explain the affiliation between two groups; the balance of threat, the organizational needs, and the identity affinity respectively. This research finds some support for the view that non-state armed groups (NAGs) seek alliances if they can't develop develop required capabilities to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
