This dissertation examines the recent increase of anti-Americanism in Turkey through an analysis of its individual-level determinants. Using survey data from 2016, the dissertation employs multiple regression analysis to understand why the new wave of antiAmericanism hit Turkey in the 2010s. The study tests 1) the issue-oriented explanation that analyses the surge of anti-Americanism through the lenses of ethnic divisions within Turkey, 2) the claims of the Islamic Rage theory and its theoretical derivatives arguing for an association between anti-Americanism and Islamic-conservative sensibilities, and 3) the association of nationalism with anti-American attitudes in line with the predictions of the theory of reactive identities. The study also runs a correlation test to explore whether antiAmericanism and euroscepticism are interdependent as assumed in the literature. The results demonstrate the significant association of anti-Americanism with ethnicity and religiousconservative lifestyle and the strong correlation between anti-Americanism and euroscepticism.
