Özet

Postfeminism says that women have won all their rights, that women are free to do whatever they want, so feminism is no longer valid. Through the media, it emphasizes individuality, consumption and choice in parallel with neoliberalism. Women are reminded that they are free to work as they are in any other subject, it is entirely up to them if they want to stay at home and take care of their children. However, this so-called“preference”is only offered to women and other social factors such as traditional family roles, gender and income inequality are not taken into account. This understanding throws responsibility over the system, and since the problem is not structural, it does not require a structural solution. In-depth interviews were conducted with six British middle-class mothers, three of whom were working and three of whom were non-working, to explore the impact of the postfeminist“preference”factor in women with children's decision to quit their careers and become fulltime mothers. As a result of the interviews, the cost of kindergartens, the inconsistency of working and school hours, the inability to get support from grandparents, the inadequacy of paternity leave, the work culture not matching the family culture; It has been seen that it is more disadvantageous in terms of not allowing flexible and part-time work. Women have left their jobs because women earn less than men and traditionally expected domestic roles. At the end of the study, it was revealed that the decision to quit the job was taken as a result of the forcing of structural conditions rather than purely preference, so the solutions should also be structural.
