Studies have demonstrated that income inequality is a predictor of many negative individual and societal outcomes. However, past research could not draw a clear conclusion about the relationship between income inequality and life satisfaction. The present study tests if income inequality affects life satisfaction negatively and whether trait-gratitude moderates this relationship by buffering the negative effect of income inequality on life satisfaction. In this study, income inequality was manipulated by scenarios that represent two fictional societies with different income distributions (high vs. low income inequality). The data (N = 681) showed that people who imagine living in a more unequal society anticipate significantly lower life satisfaction in comparison with people imagining a life in a less unequal society. However, the results revealed no significant interaction effect between trait-gratitude and income inequality on life satisfaction. In other words, the findings suggest that while higher income inequality results in lower life satisfaction; trait-gratitude does not moderate this relationship. This study facilitates causal interpretations for the income inequality and life satisfaction relationship by providing evidence with an experimental manipulation. Suggestions for further research and implications are indicated.
