The different aspects of dreaming including emotional intensity of dreams, dream frequency, nightmare frequency, nightmare distress are affected by the traits of depression, anxiety and sleep quality. In the present study, most aspects of dreaming were investigated separately and the role of sleep quality in the relationship between dream characteristics and the traits were assessed. The results showed that people with severe depression and high level of anxiety experienced more emotionally intense dreams and a high level of nightmare distress. They also had higher word frequency in their childhood nightmare narratives. Dream frequency and nightmare frequency were not affected by anxiety and depression. The moderator effect of sleep quality was investigated by using Hayes PROCESS macro. According to the results, while sleep quality moderated the relationship between anxiety, nightmare distress and word frequency in childhood nightmare narratives, it just moderated the relationship between depression and emotional intensity of dreams. To sum up, although sleep quality has significant effects on the relationship between the traits of anxiety, depression and different aspects of dreaming, it affected different aspects.
