This dissertation examines how consumer behavior is shaped by subconscious advertising in the digital media, by asking the question how targeted advertising manipulates a user's deep psychology to change his/her decision in the context of consumer society. To answer this, I draw on Jean Baudrillard's theory of consumer society which focused on manipulating the relationship between signifier and signified. I also investigate whether there is a difference between text-based media culture and visual-based media culture and suggest that visual-media culture is closer to the subconscious and therefore it is easier to manipulate a person's consumption habits. I also draw on the work of Sigmund Freud and Ridvan Senturk to demonstrate the difference that modern culture is based on text and post-modern culture is based on visuality. Then I examine targeted advertising and chose Cambridge Analytica as a case study to prove how advertisers use psychology to change a user's decision in the last chapter of the dissertation. I found that the internet has developed more manipulative advertising techniques in advertisements by using more advanced methods.
