Özet (Çeviri)
The relationship between Europeans and Turks dates back to centuries ago. Although the context and the content of this relationship have changed over time (mostly enmity until 19th century, various alliances since then) the fact that this relationship, and its type, playing an important role for both sides haven't changed. The current shape of the type of this relationship was formed in 1963 with the Ankara Agreement, and with Turkish application to become a member of the EU in 1987. Since then, the relation between Europe and Turkey can be framed as the relationship between the European Union and Turkey. Possibly one of the most important aspects of Turkey-Europe relationships are security. For centuries, being located in a very geostrategic position as well as hosting a rather large and powerful military, security was one of the most important aspects for Turkey's role in this relationship. The security factor still stands, and it even has more topics added to it -such as Syrian Refugee Crisis, Energy Security and so on-. This, however, does not mean that Turkey is always in an advantageous position in relation with EU when it comes to security. The security aspect also comes with problems especially when it comes to Turkish-Greek and Turkish-Cypriot relations. Whether with a positive or a negative meaning, security takes up a big section of Turkish–European relations. Knowing the importance of the security aspect of their relations, Turkey often tried to use the“security card”to shape any situation accordingly to their wish. Turkey especially has been using this card to“push forward”for the membership talks with the EU. This paper will analyse the relationship between Turkey and EU mainly from a security angle and the affects of these security relations on the accession talks. It can be concluded that although the importance of Turkey in security sometimes are enough to initiate accession talks, without complementing liberal reforms, it is solely not enough. Further on, the security relations between EU and Turkey often damage accession talks, rather than initiate progress.
