Physical affection is strongly associated with relational well-being, as it is an essential component of romantic relationships, however, it is unknown whether physical affection is responsible for high relational well-being, or emerges more frequently in healthy relationships. To fill this gap in the literature, this study investigates whether physical affection is causally associated with relationship quality. For the experimental manipulation of physical affection, we used a smart-phone application to prompt participants to show physical affection in their daily life to their partner, when both partners are in the same location. Relationship quality was measured before and after the study period with a self-report questionnaire. Additionally, we investigated whether attachment style moderates the association between physical affection and relationship quality. Thirty-nine couples were assigned to experimental (N=20) and control (N=19) conditions for two weeks. Multilevel dyadic data analysis revealed no significant difference between experimental and control groups in post-study measurement of relationship quality. However, explorative analyses of the daily diary data revealed higher levels of averaged momentary feelings of intimacy in the experimental condition, compared to the control condition. Attachment style did not moderate either of the effects. Theoretical implications and future directions are discussed.
