Özet

Avrupa coğrafyasında İlkçağ'dan beri süregelen, Ortaçağ'da Kara Ölüm olarak adlandırılan vebanın geç Ortaçağ'dan 18. yüzyıla değin Batı resmindeki temsilini konu ikonografik açıdan ele alan bu çalışma üç bölümden oluşmaktadır. Çalışmanın birinci bölümünde vebanın yüzyıllar süren tarihçesinden bahsedilmiş, ardından vebanın yol açtığı politik ve sosyal sonuçlara değinilmiştir. Salgının kültür ve sanata etkilerine de kısaca değinilen birinci bölümün oluşturduğu genel çerçevenin ardından çalışmanın odağında yer alan vebanın temsilleri ikonografik yöntem ışığında ele alınmaya başlanmıştır. İkinci bölümün temel konusu, veba salgını sırasında koruyuculuk rolü üstlenen Meryem ve azizlerle ilgili sahnelerdir. Salgından etkilenenler ve özellikle vebalı bedenlerin daha ön planda olduğu üçüncü bölümde kurban sahnelerine yer verilip hastalığın yol açtığı ruh halinden de beslenen temalara (Ölümün Zaferi, Danse Macabre vd) odaklanılmıştır. Bu bölümde ayrıca vebanın edebiyata olan yansımaları göz önünde bulundurulmuş olup, kitap baskılarında yer alan resimlere de yer verilmiştir. Kara Ölüm süreci ve sonrasında meydana gelen veba salgınlarının sanattaki etkileri üzerine temellenen çalışmada, başlı başına bir tema olarak vebanın Batı resmindeki temsilleri hem sahne kalıpları hem de anlam açısından incelenmiştir.

The plague, which has been ongoing since antiquity in the European geography and is called the Black Death in the Middle Ages, has been observed since the late Middle Ages to the 18th century. This work, which deals with the representation of the century in European painting from an iconographic point of view, consists of three parts. In the first part of the study, the centuries-long history of the plague was mentioned, followed by the political and social consequences caused by the plague. After the general framework created by the first part, which also briefly touched on the effects of the epidemic on culture and art, the representations of the plague, which are the focus of the study, have started to be considered in the light of the iconographic method. The main theme of the second part is the scenes about Virgin Mary and the saints who take on a protective role during the plague epidemic. In the third part, where those affected by the epidemic and especially the plague bodies are at the forefront, sacrifice scenes are included and themes that feed on the mood caused by the disease (The Triumph of Death, Danse Macabre, etc.) are focused. In this section, the reflections of the plague on literature have also been taken into account and the depictions included in the book editions have also been included. In the study based on the effects of the plague epidemics that occurred during the Black Death process and after it in art, the representations of the plague in European painting as a theme in itself were examined both in terms of scene forms and meaning.
