Özet

Bu tez modern siyasal kuramın kurucusu olarak görülen düşünürlerden biri olan Thomas Hobbes'un siyaset felsefesini teolojik-politik problem bağlamında siyasal ve kutsal arasındaki ilişki üzerinden incelemektedir. Çalışmanın temel iddiasına göre, 'That Jesus is the Christ' akidesi Hobbes'ta siyasal ve kutsal arasındaki ayrılmaz ilişkinin somut ifadesidir ve teolojik-politik probleme bir yanıt niteliğindedir. Bu temel iddia, Carl Schmitt'in Hobbes'un devlet kuramında“aşkınlığa açılan bir kapının”var olup olmadığı sorusundan hareketle yanıtlanmıştır. Schmitt'in bu sorusunun devamı 'that Jesus is the Christ' akidesinin bir başka cümleyle değiştirilme olasılığına dairdir. Bu çalışmada ilgili sorulara verilecek olumlu yanıtın siyasal ve kutsal arasındaki ilişkiyi merkeze alan yöntemsel bir siyasal teolojiyle mümkün olduğu gösterilmiştir. Bu yöntemsel yaklaşımı temellendirmek için, ilk bölümde modern egemenlik kuramının doğuşu ve gelişiminde ortaya çıkan siyasal ve kutsal arasındaki gerilimli ilişki açıklanmıştır. Siyasal teolojinin bir yöntem olarak ele alınması gerekliliğinin arka planı bu şekilde ortaya konduktan sonra siyasal teolojinin Schmittçi bağlamı eleştirel bir incelemeye tabii tutulmuştur. Bu sayede siyasal teoloji ile Straussçu Teolojik-Politik Problem arasında bağlantı kurulmuş, siyasal ve kutsal arasındaki ilişkinin yönü siyaset felsefesi açısından tartışılmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde, teolojik-politik problemin sosyolojik boyutu Durkheim'ın kutsal-profan ayrımı üzerinden açıklığa kavuşturulmuştur. Dördüncü bölümde ise teolojik-politik probleme Hobbes'un Leviathan'ındaki yanıtı incelenmiş; bu çerçevede siyasal ve kutsal arasındaki ilişkinin modern siyasal kuramda nasıl kurulduğu gösterilmiştir. Tezde, Hobbes'un Leviathan'da yaşam hakkı temelinde siyasal-kamusal-kutsal olanı örtüştüren bir ahitle bu problemi çözmeye çalıştığı öne sürülmüştür. That Jesus is the Christ sözü bu çözümün somutlaştığı simgesel akidedir.

This thesis examines the political philosophy of Thomas Hobbes, one of the founders and most prominent thinkers of modern political theory, through the relationship between the political and the sacred in the context of the theological-political problem. This study asserts that the creed“That Jesus is the Christ”is the concrete expression of the inseparable relationship between the political and the sacred in Hobbes. It also suggests that the said creed is a profound response to the theological-political problem. This issue is discussed with reference to Carl Schmitt's question whether there is a“door to transcendence”in Hobbes' theory of the state. Accordingly, Schmitt ascertains whether or not replacing the creed“that Jesus is the Christ”with another sentence appears as a possibility. The answer to these questions can be affirmative through a methodological political theology that centres on the relationship between the political and the sacred. In order to justify this methodological approach, the first section of the study delves into the tense relationship between the political and the sacred that became discernible in the emergence and development of modern sovereignty theory. After having laid out the background of the necessity of treating political theology as a method in this way, the study proceeds in the second chapter to critically examine Schmittian context of political theology which in turn allows not only to establish a connection between political theology and the Straussian Theological-Political Problem but also to discuss the direction of the relationship between the political and the sacred in terms of political philosophy. The third chapter of the thesis sets out to clarify the sociological dimension of the theological-political problem through Durkheim's sacred-profane distinction. The fourth and final chapter delineates Hobbes' response to the theological-political problem in his Leviathan with a view to display how the relationship between the political and the sacred is established in modern political theory. All in all the thesis argues that Hobbes tries to address this issue in Leviathan with the covenant that incorporates the political-public-sacred on the basis of the right to life. 'That Jesus is the Christ' is the article of faith that embodies this solution.
