Özet

Wensveen (2015) demonstrated that there is a strong possibility that the dynamic airline industry leads to adjustable changes being made to business models. Therefore, it is possible to say that the changing environment encourages airlines to develop differences in their business models. The business model concept is defined by Morris et al. (2005) as decisive steps relative to strategy, architecture and economics that can create a differenciation for each company in its own industry. Two examples of accepted business model concepts in the airline industry are the low-cost and full-service models. A business model concept is crucial in order to determine a company's business model in terms of future aims, costs and profitability. Defining and determining these changes is the most important stage in order to ensure airlines' improved profitability and healthy management. The dissertation is aimed at resolving the question of if, or how, the different characteristics and formations take shape inside the low-cost business model in terms of meeting performance and profitability benchmarks. A case study in the U.S. low-cost airline market with Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines have been made in order to illustrate low-cost business model characteristics shapes and shifts inside this business model. The research conducted is primarily based on the profitability, product and performance benchmarked model from Mason and Morrison's (2008) Product and Organisational Architecture (POA). Secondary data was used to determine each airlines' performance level in terms of the profitability benchmark. Also, additional calculations on secondary data are made where direct data is absent. The study and data collection is approved by the University of Surrey Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Ethics Committee. An overview of the airline industry is provided to foster an understanding of the industry environment's structure and its impact on the airlines, as well as their business models. Following this, the limitations of the definition of a business model, as well as the lack of common and insufficient analysis frameworks, are explained using various studies on business models. Adaptations are made to POA and new indicators, such as ancillary revenue, are added, while some, for example airport index, are eliminated due to data limitations and to create a more authentic model in terms of industry trends. This research is intended to provide an interesting and fresh analysis on airline business models with Mason and Morrison's (2008) POA and additional components while being away from the usual classic models using questionnaires. Some new components are added to the model for more actual analysis, while they may not be acceptable for everyone, ii the results provide an insight on changes in low-cost business models. This research's implications are two-fold: firstly, the majority of the findings in this research support the existing theories on the possibility of differentiating airline business models with significant differences in terms of performance; secondly, the interpretation of the research results and literature show that low-cost airlines are attempting to create and adapt their business models parallel to their own strategic priorities, value chains, capacities and aims, which might be the main steps, that make business models profitable even with its different variations
