Özet

In economic literature, long-run human capital development studied scarcely due to limited data. Elite numeracy is used to assess human capital. The long-run development of human capital from the 4th century to the 20th century is aimed to be found with the potential determinants. The used variables that are examined in various Asian countries are regicide, early adoption of steel for swords, surface temperature, droughts, snow disasters, nomadic attacks, and governors. In order to find the early elite numeracy rates, the share of the known birth years of rulers is used as a proxy indicator. Results show that elite numeracy was found to be highest at the beginning of the period and decreases as time passed till the 16th century in West Asia. As a result, elite violence had adverse effects on human capital formation. Robust regression and cluster of the century residuals are carried out for droughts, snow disasters and nomadic attack variables. Drought and governors have a significant adverse effect, while surface temperature and early adoption for steel positively affect elite numeracy. Elite numeracy levels increase after the period 17- 18th century for all the countries in West Asia. After the period 15- 17th century, a rise in elite numeracy has been observed for all the regions in Asia.
