Özet
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between perceived parenting styles (emotional warmth, overprotection, rejection) and eating behaviours (uncontrolled eating, emotional eating and restricted eating) and the role of experiential avoidance. As the reference, 69 dieticians' patients aged between 18 and 50 participated in an online survey. Perceived parenting styles were assessed by using a short version of the Egna Minnen Barndoms Uppfostran scale for children (sEMBU/C). The Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-Tr21) was used to measure the patients' eating behaviour. Participants' level of experiential avoidance was measured by using the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II). Finally, Spearman correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data. Correlation analyses revealed that people who perceived their fathers' parenting style as rejection showed higher emotional eating behaviour. However, there was no significant correlation between mothers' perceived parenting styles and eating behaviours. Due to the lack of a significant relationship between perceived parenting styles and eating behaviours, the experiential avoidance mediation was unable to be performed. The relationship between perceived parenting styles and experiential avoidance was analyzed with a correlation analysis. The analysis showed that perceiving higher emotional warmth from parents was related to lower experiential avoidance, whereas perceiving parents as overprotective and rejective had negative correlation with experiential avoidance. Perceived rejection from both parents had positive correlation with experiential avoidance. Participants' BMI scores were positively related to emotional eating and 2 uncontrolled eating. The results of the current study, limitations of the study and future research directions were discussed.
