Özet

The present study explores the emergence of recent fiction by British Muslims through the examples of Hanif Kureishi's The Black Album and Leila Aboulela's The Translator. Marked by their invisibility for decades, British Muslims have become the focus of mainstream British media, as well as the victims of new forms of othering and discrimination after 9/11, the 7/7 bombings, and the subsequent war on terror. This dissertation seeks to address the ways in which each novel deals with the tension between“British”and“Muslim”identities within the context of the widespread phenomenon of second-generation immigrants identifying themselves as Muslims. Central to the main argument of the dissertation is the necessity to distinguish British Muslim identity from other burgeoning identities in Britain, which were conceptualised as“new identities”in Stuart Hall's writings from the late 1980s onwards. This study also proposes to read The Black Album and The Translator alongside Victorian novels of faith and doubt and argues that these two novels attest to the British novel's renewed interest in religion and the religious as significant literary themes.
