Özet

Geçmişi Antik Çağ'a kadar uzanan metal kutular, günümüzde pek çok ürünü koruma görevini üstlenmiştir. Tenekenin icadı sonrası metal ambalajlar her sınıfa hitap eden dayanıklı ve sağlıklı olma özellikleriyle ön plana çıkmıştır. Paketleme çağından önce bir malzeme olarak teneke, mutfak araç gereçleri, saklama kapları, çeşitli kutular vb. gibi başlıca kullanım alanları arasında yerini almıştır. Teneke kutu, günümüze kadar geçen sürede ürünü korumak için önemli bir işlev görmüş ve ideal bir kap haline gelmiştir. Tenekenin demirin dövülerek sac haline getirilmesiyle ilk defa Bohemya'da üretilmesi, bölgenin Antik Çağ'lardan beri metal açısından zengin cevherlere sahip olmasıyla ilişkilidir. Bohemya endüstrisinin Saksonya'ya genişlemesiyle teneke üretimi; daha sonra İngiltere, Fransa ve ardından diğer ülkelere yayılmıştır. 18'inci yüzyıl Avrupa'da uzun süre devam eden savaşlar sebebiyle askerlerin beslenme sorunlarına çözüm olan teneke kutu, sağladığı gıda muhafazası ile insanların beslenme alışkanlıklarını etkilemiştir. Bu yeniliği değerlendiren Nicolas Appert, konserve fikrine ilk adım atan kişi olarak tarihe geçmiştir. Devamında Peter Durand ise bu fikri genişletip bir adım daha ileri taşıyarak yiyeceği bir teneke kutuya koymuştur. Teneke kutunun büyüleyici tarihi ve gıda muhafazasına uygulanması Fransa'da başlayıp, Büyük Britanya'ya geçmiştir ve ardından ABD'ye taşınmıştır (Holcomb & Twede, 2003: 162). İnsanlık tarihinde köklü değişikliklerin yaşandığı 18. yüzyılda yaşanan Endüstri Devrimiyle tüketicilerin değişen ve gelişen talepleri hız göstererek ambalaj, ürünün önemli bir parçası haline dönüşmüştür. Birbirini tetikleyen üretici arzı ve tüketici talebi, yeni yöntemlerin oluşturulmasını gerektirmiştir. Endüstri Devrimi ile beraber yeni üretim süreçlerinin ve malzemelerin geliştirilmesiyle teneke kutu ürünü korumada ve saklamada kullanışlı bir seçenek haline gelmiştir. Teneke ambalajın gelişimi, Endüstri Devrimi'nin getirdiği makineleşme olgusunun somut bir sonucudur. Bu gelişim toplu üretimi beraberinde getirmiş, üretimin hızla yayılmasıyla da ticari rekabet artmış, ambalaj ve ambalaj tasarımı değer kazanmıştır. 'Teneke Ambalajlarda Tipografi Kullanımı' başlığına sahip bu araştırma söz konusu teneke ambalajlarında tipografi kullanımının incelenmesini amaçlamıştır. Tarih aralığı olarak 1900-1940 arası İngiltere de teneke ambalajlarında yaygın kullanılan kişisel tüketim malzemelerinden örneklere değinilmiştir. Bunlar dışında kalan endüstriyel teneke ambalajlar bir kısıtlama olarak dahil edilmemiştir. Birinci bölümde, 1900 öncesi teneke ambalaj tasarımının gelişiminden, Endüstri Devrimi'nin bu duruma etkisinden ve Endüstri Devrimi ile gelişim gösteren ambalaj tasarımlarından bahsedilmiştir. İkinci bölümde 1900-1940 arası İngiltere'deki teneke ambalajlarının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Tezin üçüncü bölümünde teneke ambalajlarda tipografi dikkate alınarak, tipografiye değinilmiştir. Tipografinin ambalaj tasarımına yansımalarını incelemek, tipografinin çoğu zaman görselden daha etkili olduğunu, aynı zamanda tipografiyle de görsel bir tat yakalanabileceğini gösterebilmek ve ambalaj tasarımlarında tipografi kullanımı konusunda literatüre katkı sağlamak çalışmanın amacını oluşturmaktadır. Son bölümde uygulama çalışmasında ise retro bir anlatıma sahip olan ambalaj uygulama projesine yer verilmiştir.

Metal boxes, which date back to the Ancient Age, have undertaken the task of protecting many products today. After the invention of tin, metal packaging has come to the fore with its durable and healthy features that appeal to all classes. Before the age of packaging, tin as a material was used for kitchen utensils, storage containers, various boxes, etc. It has taken its place among the main usage areas such as. Until today, the tin can has served an important function to protect the product and has become an ideal container. The fact that tinplate was first produced in Bohemia by hammering iron into sheet metal is related to the fact that the region has had metal-rich ores since ancient times. With the expansion of Bohemian industry into Saxony, tin production; It later spread to England, France and then other countries. The tin can, which was a solution to the nutritional problems of soldiers due to the long-lasting wars in Europe in the 18th century, affected people's eating habits with the food preservation it provided. Evaluating this innovation, Nicolas Appert went down in history as the first person to take the first step towards the idea of canning. Later, Peter Durand expanded this idea and took it one step further by putting the food in a tin can. The fascinating history of the can and its application to food preservation began in France, passed to Great Britain, and then moved to the USA (Holcomb & Twede, 2003: 162). With the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, which witnessed radical changes in human history, the changing and developing demands of consumers accelerated and packaging became an important part of the product. Producer supply and consumer demand triggering each other necessitated the creation of new methods. With the development of new production processes and materials with the Industrial Revolution, tin cans have become a useful option for protecting and storing products. The development of tin packaging is a concrete result of the mechanization brought about by the Industrial Revolution. This development brought about mass production, and with the rapid spread of production, commercial competition increased and packaging and packaging design gained value. This research, titled 'Use of Typography in Tin Packaging', aimed to examine the use of typography in the tin packaging in question. Examples of personal consumption items commonly used in tin packaging in England between 1900 and 1940 are mentioned. Other than these, industrial tin packaging is not included as a restriction. In the first part, the development of tin packaging design before 1900, the impact of the Industrial Revolution on this situation, and the packaging designs that developed with the Industrial Revolution were mentioned. The second chapter aims to examine tin packaging in England between 1900 and 1940. In the third part of the thesis, typography is mentioned, taking into account typography in tin packaging. The aim of the study is to examine the reflections of typography on packaging design, to show that typography is often more effective than visual, and that a visual taste can also be achieved with typography, and to contribute to the literature on the use of typography in packaging designs. In the last section, the application study includes a packaging application project with a retro expression.
