Özet
20. yüzyıl başından itibaren hızla gelişen havacılık endüstrisi, yerküredeki seyahat süreleri önemli ölçüde kısaltmıştır. Havacılığın gelişimi ile olarak ortaya çıkan ve sivil hava taşımacılığının merkezi sayılabilecek havalimanları, günümüzde yolcuların uçağa binmeden önce keyifli vakit geçirerek rahatlayabilecekleri, kişisel bakım salonları, spor salonları ve müzelerin bulunduğu kamusal alanlara dönüşmüşlerdir. İstanbul'un yeni havalimanında faaliyet gösteren İstanbul Havalimanı Müzesi, T.C. Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığı ve İGA İstanbul Havalimanı İşletmesi arasında 2019 yılında imzalanan protokol kapsamında başlayan çalışmaların neticesinde 17.07.2020 tarihinde ziyarete açılmıştır. Müze, Türkiye'de açılan ilk havalimanı müzesidir ve İstanbul Havalimanı terminali dış hatlar gidiş katındaki asma katta 1000 m2'lik bir alana kurulmuştur. Dünyadaki örnekleri arasında kapladığı yüzölçümü bakımından en büyüğüdür. İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzeleri Müdürlüğü'nün bağlı birimi olarak faaliyet gösteren müze,“Türkiye'nin Hazineleri, Tahtın Yüzleri”adlı bir süreli sergi ile açılmıştır. Anadolu topraklarının 12000 yıl öncesinden günümüze kadarki tarihsel ve kültürel çeşitliliğinin 29 farklı müzeden toplam 262 adet eser ile 2 adet mulaj, 4 adet kopya ve 1 adet maketle yansıtıldığı bu sergi ile Türkiye'nin tanıtımı ve özellikle havalimanını transit olarak kullanan yolcuların bir sonraki rotalarını Türkiye'ye çevirmeleri amaçlanmıştır.“Havalimanı Müzeleri ve Türkiye'den Bir Örnek: İstanbul Havalimanı Müzesi”başlıklı bu tez kapsamında havalimanı terminallerinde faaliyet gösteren müzelerin geleneksel havacılık ve uzay müzeleriyle olan farklılıkları ortaya konularak havalimanı müzeleri ve havalimanlarının birbirleriyle olan ilişkileri incelenmiştir. İstanbul Havalimanı Müzesi'nin fiziki ve teknik özellikleri anlatılarak, mevcut süreli sergi hakkında bilgi verilmiş, belli başlı eserler tanıtılmıştır. Bu tez kapsamında incelenen diğer havalimanı müzeleri örnekleri ile İstanbul Havalimanı Müzesi karşılaştırılarak, benzerlikleri ve farklılıkları ele alınmıştır.

After the first powered, controlled flight achieved by the Wright brothers in 1903, the aviation industry grew quickly in the 20th century. Globally, travel durations have shortened dramatically, thanks in large part to technological advancements made during and after World War II. Airports, which originated as the hubs of civil aviation, are no longer places used only for traveling from one point to another, as air travel has become more affordable and commonplace. Airports are now public areas with amenities like museums, gyms, and personal care salons where travelers can relax and enjoy themselves before their flights. The Istanbul Airport Museum was established on July 17, 2020, as a consequence of the agreement signed by İGA Enterprise and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey. It is situated at Istanbul's new airport, which started operations in 2019, on the mezzanine floor of the international departures floor of the Istanbul Airport terminal. The museum is the first airport museum in Turkey. With a total area of 1000 m2, it is the biggest airport museum globally. With a total of 261 pieces on display from 29 different Turkish museums, the temporary exhibition“Treasures of Turkey, Faces of the Throne”reflects the historical and cultural diversity of Anatolia from twelve thousand years ago to the present. The purpose of this exhibition is to raise awareness of Turkey around the globe and encourage transit travelers to think about visiting Turkey on their next trip itinerary. The thesis“Airport Museums and an Example from Turkey: Istanbul Airport Museum”defines airport museums by outlining the distinctions between conventional aviation and space museums and museums housed in airport terminals. In addition, it discusses the relationship between airports and airport museums as well as the rationale behind their existence. Finally, it draws comparisons between Istanbul Airport Museum and other airport museums across the globe, outlining the museum's advantages and disadvantages. The thesis's first section provides a brief overview of aviation history, defines airports and airport museums, and highlights the distinctions between traditional air and space museums that cover aviation history and airport museums that operate inside operational airport terminals. The benefits of museums and exhibitions are examined, along with the rationale behind their opening in airport terminals. Furthermore mentioned are the temporary exhibitions held at airports and model airports. In the second section, firstly İGA Istanbul Airport is introduced, and information is provided about the establishment of the Istanbul Airport Museum, the physical, technical, and administrative features of the Istanbul Airport Museum, and the current temporary exhibition. The third section looked at fourteen sample airport museums that were found to be operational in airport terminals around the world. Information is provided on airport museums located in the cities of San Francisco, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Cleveland, and Melbourne in the USA; Paris in France; Seoul in South Korea; Mumbai in India; Amsterdam in the Netherlands; Tokyo in Japan; Moscow in Russia; Athens in Greece; and Cairo in Egypt. In this thesis, the similar and different features of the Istanbul Airport Museum and the world airport museums were examined. In the evaluation section. The number of passengers using the international departure floor of the Istanbul Airport terminal was compared with the number of visitors to the Istanbul Airport Museum; suggestions were made on how the museum could reach more visitors, and the strengths and weaknesses of the museum were discussed. The Istanbul Airport Museum is the first of its kind in our country, and the conclusion emphasizes that this first airport museum experience—with all of its positive and negative aspects—is a model for our country's future airport museums.
