51 SUMMARY In this study, serotonin and I.-tryptophan levels- were studied before and after a diet without protein in bipolar I patients on lithium or carbamazepine treatment. Our study consisted of 32 bipolar I patients according to DSM IV criteria and 10 healthy volunteers. Twenty-two of the patients were on lithium treatment while the others were on carbamazepine. Neither of them had an important systemic disease. The baseline serotonin and L-tryptophan levels were detected from the blood samples obtained both from the patients and the healthy controls before the diet without protein. After a week of a diet without protein in hospital conditions, the second blood samples were taken. The serotonin and [.-tryptophan values detected before the diet were not statistically different between the groups. After the diet, the serotonin levels of lithium treated group were significantly lower than those of the other groups. There was no significant difference between the lithium treated patients and the controls in L-tryptophan.Serotonin and I, -tryptophan levels detected from the earbamazepine treated patients after the diet were not different from (hose of the other groups. As a conclution both lithium and earbamazepine have a stabilizing effect on serotonergic system inspile of low protein diet. I lowever earbamazepine has a superiorly on this system when it's compaired with lithium.
