Direct democracy, a form of governance where citizens directly participate in decision-making, has a long and rich history. The Landsgemeinde, a unique form of direct democracy practiced in Swierland, stands as a compelling example of this approach. In the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and Glarus, citizens gather annually in open-air assemblies to debate and vote on proposed laws and policies. This tradition, dating back to the 13th century, oers valuable insights into the potential of direct democracy to foster civic engagement, promote transparency, and enhance democratic legitimacy.
