Hoped and feared for expectations of ageing in people with physical impairments: A qualitative research study

Özet

Fostering a healthy ageing process for people with physical impairment (PI) is paramount, as it impacts not only individuals but also a broader societal context. How people with PI anticipate their future ageing could be the primary determinant of their healthy ageing process, impacting their physical, mental, and social wellbeing. This qualitative study used in-depth interviews with six participants with different PIs in order to acquire rich insights into their future ageing expectations. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was utilised to examine how people with PI make sense of their future old age. As a result of the analysis, four group experiential themes were generated: meaninglessness of hope in ageing, hope for advancement in healthcare services in ageing, the dual role of sociability as a source of both hope and fear in ageing, and fear of getting trapped in dependency and inadequacy in ageing. This study concluded that people ageing with PI perceive their future old age as a period dominated by their fears. Furthermore, their hopes for future ageing are less certain and inferred as unreachable. This implies that people might be less motivated to engage in the healthy ageing process. Therefore, interventions targeted at supporting healthy ageing in people with PI should consider people with PI's future expectations and encourage people with PI to have more hopeful expectations attainable with rational goals.
