Aim: Radiotherapy, one of the treatment methods for cancer, causes many symptoms in patients. These symptoms cause many nutritional problems in patients. This study evaluated the nutritional status and symptoms experienced by cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. Material and Method: This study was conducted with 192 volunteer patients hospitalized in the Radiation Oncology Department of Atatürk University, who were applied to the Outpatient Radiation Unit and met the inclusion criteria. This study collected data from the Patient Information Form, Subjective Global Assessment (SGD) Scale and Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS). In the data obtained from this study, descriptive statistical methods, parametric tests, t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis, and regression analysis were used to analyze the variables. Results: The study determined that the patients' Subjective Global Assessment Scale mean score was 4.83±1.15, indicating mild-moderate malnutrition. The mean scores obtained from the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale were 1.45±0.56 in the“global distress index”sub-dimension, 1.19±0.54 in the“physical symptom”sub-dimension, 1.53±0.60 in the“psychological symptom”sub-dimension, and 1.04±0.41 in the total symptom score. According to the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale, the first five symptoms most frequently experienced by the patients were determined to be feeling sad (91.1%), being/feeling sensitive (87.5%), weakness or loss of energy (84.4%), worry (80.7%), and pain (79.2%). A moderately negative and statistically significant correlation was found between the patients' Subjective Global Assessment Scale mean score and the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale mean score (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study determined that cancer patients receiving radiotherapy had mild-moderate malnutrition and experienced moderate symptoms. It was determined that the symptoms decreased as the nutritional status of the patients improved.
