The militarization of foreign policy is a contentious issue, and the perception of militarization relies to some extent on a“when and where”principle. The GWT is a good example, and the events of 9/11 brought cultural and societal changes that resonate with us even today: collective action, world leadership, and alliances“against”terror in a war with no fronts. Turkey, a country at the borders of the Middle East, has experienced significant political shifts while adjusting itself to such turbulent times. Still, its most recent successes come from its militarized foreign policy, whether on the field in Libya, diplomacy in Ukraine, or repeated incursions into Syria. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the causes of this militarization and understand why Turkey had a sudden shift towards militarization after 2016. To accomplish this, the dissertation will examine and compare literature on the topic and supplement it with information from first-hand interviews with senior personnel who are currently working in the defense industry and government ministries.
