The development of the production of Turkish children's publications have practiced a sharp rise during the last twenty years. Even in 80' s, we could only talk about just a few publishers producing for children, whose programs didn't really emphasize on some special areas like preschool and teen age. Now, making books for preschool children is one of the most popular area for the publishers whose number is around 100. Books for teen age group did not really show an abrupt rise, but it has just been a common interest for many authors to write for this age group. (One of the biggest banks have just put a big prize on novels for teenagers.) Whatever the area of production, development is always started by the rise in quantity and it is essentially followed by the improvement in quality. The rise in the production of children' s books that we observe now, must pass through a healthy evaluation process. This process will be performed by the readers, parents, teachers, academics and librarians. The evaluation of the products by scientific methods will give us objective knowledge of what we have. I have chosen the 1996-98 products for my inspection. These were first edition fictions written by local authors. No translations were included. With the help of a book evaluation sheet, I have tried to come up with a structural panorama of each book, emphasizing on the text style and the content. As a result, I have reached the conclusion that authors, and publishers, though they raised the number of products, are not really in an effort to give what children want. Lack of books on humor and tension is a good example.
