This Master's Thesis aims to analyze the perceptions of citizens on the differentness of the citizen groups that are affiliated with the“other”group. In this research, citizens' in-out group categorization is taken from the dimensions of language and culture by asking“How does the way people identify themselves play a decisive role in determining their predisposition for voting for nationalist political parties about their perceptions of separatist movements occurred in Basque Country compared to Catalonia?”According to leading theories, one's self-identification plays a crucial role in perceiving their social and political environment. How citizens perceive the relations between their social environment within and outside the group they belong to, directly or indirectly affects how they shape their political actions and decision-making processes such as their electoral processes. Therefore, this master's thesis aims to contribute to further research by demonstrating the complex linkages between people's emotions, and psychological processes and the reveal of these processes as a form of political behavior. As criticism of rational choice theories, people's real-life practices are not only based on their conscious cost-benefit calculation, but they could be affected purely by human psychology. To understand the crucial role of social identities, the research takes the Basque and Catalan independence movements as a comparative case study to see the relationship between group categorization and political behavior. The role of social identity is significant in determining the shape of the movement. In Basque Country, the involvement of a violent actor in the movement namely ETA may affect the level of mobilization and might have led to the creation of stricter in-group categorizations by increasing the level of group affiliation. On the other hand, the Catalan independence movement has been functioning as a wave of tensions which makes the group identification weaker since the affiliation with the movement is expected to be weaker according to the secondary sources that guide this research. Considering that, the expected result is that in Basque Country, people would vote for Basque Nationalist Party while in Catalonia, the expected level of voting for the Catalan Nationalist Parties would be less likely. For having an in-depth understanding of people's perceptions and experiences, semi-structured interviews are conducted, and the data is analyzed utilizing qualitative analysis methods by identifying 5 themes from the transcription of the answers. Even though the research could not observe the level of difference. In the perception of Catalan and Basque citizens as expected, the research illustrates that the leading political psychology theories are still valid in explaining the uptrend of political polarization in most representative democracies.
