This thesis focuses on the improvement of the downforce generation of the ARL SP-1 race car. The method that was chosen for this aim was to mount wings in the side pods of the car, where there was sufficient space. The analysis of the car was conducted by CFD which allowed quick decision making and conclusion processes. Several complex simulations were tested in a short amount of time. The geometry of the wing influences the magnitude of the downforce and drag generated and thus an optimum wing geometry was selected with the aid of a literature review. The selected wing geometry was NACA 9612. Multiple wing geometries were analysed and compared during the selection process with the use of XFOIL software. The accuracy of the CFD simulations needed to be ensured and thus two validation tests were conducted to select a suitable turbulence model. The selection process was further aided by literature review and by exploring relevant CFD theory. The selected turbulence model was the Realisable K-Epsilon model. With the validation tests done, the simulations on the ARL SP-1 were conducted. The initial design choice generated lift instead of downforce with an insignificant magnitude of -1.97 N. The reasons for this were attributed to complex flow paths which were leading to decelerated air flow with multiple recirculatory regions. A further modification incorporated a front intake on the front of the bodywork which led to a 983% increase in the generated downforce. However, this was not a significant improvement for the car as this led to a downforce magnitude of 17.4 N. Further modifications would be unlikely to increase the downforce to levels of relevancy as the bodywork and chassis of the car were not suitable for significant changes. Therefore, it was concluded that the generation of downforce by wings mounted inside the sidepods of the ARL SP-1 was not feasible. Based on the conclusions, a new car bodywork was proposed to make the design feasible.
