Özet
Bu tez, 20. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından günümüze kadar uzanan bir zaman dilimi içerisinde çağdaş fotoğraf sanatında bedenin temsiline odaklanarak, görsel kültürün toplumsal cinsiyet, kimlik ve güç ilişkileri bağlamında dönüşümünü araştırmaktadır. Özellikle feminist ve kuir teorilerin rehberliğinde, kimlik ve bedenin performatif doğası, sanat üretimi üzerinden çözümlemeye tabi tutulmuştur. Araştırmanın temel amacı, çağdaş fotoğraf sanatında bedenin hem bir temsil nesnesi hem de direnişin, kimlik inşasının ve normların sorgulanmasının bir aracı olarak konumlandırılışı ortaya koymaktır. Bu bağlamda, feminist sanat hareketlerinin ve kuir sanat pratiklerinin görsel stratejileri incelenerek, bedenin bir direniş alanı olarak temsil edilişi analiz edilmiştir. Toplumsal cinsiyet kimliklerinin, cinselliklerin ve ırksal farklılıkların görsel sanatlar aracılığıyla çeşitli yöntemler ile görünür kılındığı ya da sorgulandığı tespit edilmiştir. Araştırma sürecinde, nitel yöntemler temel alınmış; görsel analiz, kavramsal çerçeve oluşturma ve sanatçı örnekleri üzerinden yorumlama gibi yöntemlerle çalışılmıştır. Seçilen sanatçıların eserleri, görsel temsil, bedensel performans, kimlik politikaları ve estetik stratejiler açısından çözümlenmiş; bu çözümlemeler, feminist ve kuir kuramlar ışığında değerlendirilmiştir. Ayrıca, sanatçıların üretimlerinde bedenin erotik, estetik ve politik boyutları üzerinden yürütülen temsillerin, toplumsal tabuları kırması ve alternatif kimlik biçimlerinin ifadesine olanak sağlama yolları ortaya konmuştur. Bu çalışma, bedene atfedilen kimlik, cinsiyet, ırk ve özne kavramlarını hem tarihsel hem kuramsal düzlemde sorgularken, çağdaş fotoğraf sanatında bedenin temsiline dair yeni perspektifler geliştirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bedenin üstlendiği performatif işlev, sanat aracılığıyla güç ilişkilerine karşı bir söylem üretme potansiyeli taşıyan bir unsur olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Böylelikle, çağdaş fotoğraf sanatının yalnızca estetik değil, aynı zamanda politik ve toplumsal bir ifade alanı olduğu vurgulanmıştır.

This thesis focuses on the representation of the body in contemporary photography from the second half of the 20th century to the present, examining the transformation of visual culture within the context of gender, identity, and power relations. Guided particularly by feminist and queer theories, the performative nature of identity and the body is analyzed through the lens of artistic production. The primary aim of this study is to reveal how the body in contemporary photography is positioned both as an object of representation and as a means of resistance, identity construction, and questioning of norms. In this context, the visual strategies of feminist art movements and queer artistic practices are examined to analyze the representation of the body as a site of resistance. The study identifies the various ways in which gender identities, sexualities, and racial differences are made visible or problematized through visual arts. Throughout the research process, qualitative methods were employed, including visual analysis, conceptual framework development, and interpretation based on selected artist examples. The works of these artists were analyzed in terms of visual representation, bodily performance, identity politics, and aesthetic strategies, and evaluated through the lens of feminist and queer theories. Furthermore, the representations of the body in these artistic productions—across erotic, aesthetic, and political dimensions—are shown to challenge societal taboos and create space for the expression of alternative identities. This study aims to offer new perspectives on the representation of the body in contemporary photography, while critically examining the concepts of identity, gender, race, and subjectivity attributed to the body, both historically and theoretically. The performative function of the body is interpreted as an element capable of producing discourse against power relations through art. In doing so, the thesis highlights that contemporary photography is not only an aesthetic field, but also a political and social medium of expression.
