Edremit possesses a rich industrial heritage that is deeply intertwined with both its architectural structures and economic history. During the 19th century, Edremit's economy was predominantly rooted in agriculture, with olive oil production standing out as a cornerstone of its industrial and cultural identity. The cultivation of olives not only shaped the region's socio-economic structure but also had a profound impact on its physical and urban development. Olive oil factories, as significant industrial facilities of the era, were central to the local economy, supporting Edremit's growth and playing an essential role in the urbanization process. These buildings served as hubs of production, employment, and technological advancement, and their legacy continues to influence the cultural landscape of the region. Industrial structures are typically characterized by their durable construction, large scale, and utilitarian design, which makes them ideal candidates for adaptive reuse projects. The preservation and repurposing of such structures offer dual benefits: economic revitalization and cultural continuity. Repurposing industrial heritage sites allows local communities to reconnect with their historical and cultural roots while simultaneously creating opportunities for economic growth, such as boosting tourism and fostering local identity. In this context, the conservation of olive oil factories in Edremit holds significant potential for showcasing the region's unique industrial heritage and integrating it into the contemporary cultural fabric. The Selatin Olive Oil Factory, established in 1899, is a prominent example of this heritage. Operated by the fourth generation of olive oil producers, the factory continues to produce internationally acclaimed olive oil using olives hand-picked from the Edremit Gulf region. Its architectural design reflects the historical and cultural evolution of the region's olive, olive oil, and soap industries, solidifying its status as an invaluable part of Edremit's industrial heritage. Over its long history, the factory has witnessed significant technological and socio-economic transformations, and its preservation is essential to safeguarding this legacy for future generations. This study focuses on the preservation of the Selatin Olive Oil Factory, examining its architectural and historical significance within the broader context of industrial heritage. The project was developed as part of the“Architectural Conservation Project I-II”course at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Faculty of Architecture. As part of the study, the concept of industrial heritage, its importance, and approaches to its conservation were analyzed, with a focus on both national and international perspectives. Case studies from Turkey and around the world were reviewed to highlight best practices in the preservation and adaptive reuse of industrial heritage sites. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, encompassing academic studies, reports, and international conservation standards, with an emphasis on the architectural features and preservation methods specific to olive oil factories. Field and building studies were conducted to document and analyze the Selatin Olive Oil Factory. All areas of the factory were meticulously measured using traditional surveying tools, water levels, and laser meters, and the findings were recorded through detailed photographs and architectural drawings. Structural deteriorations were identified, and their causes were analyzed. Interviews were conducted with two generations of factory operators, local residents, and representatives from the Edremit Municipality to gather information about the factory's historical and current condition. Additionally, archival documents, historical maps, land registry records, and old photographs of Edremit and its surrounding olive oil factories were reviewed to reconstruct the historical context of the factory. Site visits were conducted to other olive oil factories and oil mills in the region to gather comparative data and document their architectural and functional features. These visits provided valuable insights into the regional characteristics of industrial olive oil production and informed the development of conservation strategies. Using the collected data, a detailed period analysis of the Selatin Olive Oil Factory was carried out, and restitution and restoration projects were developed. The conservation principles were determined to address the structural and material deteriorations identified during the study, ensuring the factory's long-term preservation and sustainability. The study also explores the broader tradition of olive oil production in Edremit, highlighting the Selatin Olive Oil Factory's pivotal role in preserving this heritage. By examining examples of olive oil factories from Turkey and around the world, the research aims to propose holistic conservation approaches that integrate cultural, economic, and social dimensions. These approaches seek to ensure that industrial heritage sites like the Selatin Olive Oil Factory can be preserved and adapted for contemporary use while maintaining their historical integrity and cultural significance. In conclusion, the preservation of the Selatin Olive Oil Factory is not only a means of safeguarding a unique piece of Edremit's industrial history but also an opportunity to demonstrate the value of industrial heritage conservation in fostering cultural identity, economic development, and community engagement. Through the application of comprehensive and integrated conservation strategies, this study aims to contribute to the broader discourse on the sustainable preservation and adaptive reuse of industrial heritage sites.
