Integrated photonics has radically changed the way we generate and manipulate light. Using micro- and nano-scale structures, entire optical systems have been integrated entire optical systems into chip-scale (nail-sized) devices. Using existing semiconductor fabrication and manufacturing techniques has significantly accelerated development of integrated photonics technologies, applications and optical communication systems. Infrared (IR) technologies and optical links have become the focus of essential applications in communication systems. In addition, photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are rapidly being used in many fields, from sensors to quantum technologies, biomedical applications, and imaging. In 2024, the emergence of silicon photonics as a transformative technology is particularly notable. By combining photonic and electronic functionalities within silicon-based frameworks, silicon photonics takes advantage of established manufacturing processes, enabling cost-effective, high-performance, and scalable solutions. This advancement has driven ultra-fast data transmission, energy-efficient computation, and advanced sensing technologies, making it indispensable for modern communication networks, data centers, and emerging quantum systems. Recent studies have focused on infrared (IR) technologies over a wide spectrum of wavelengths, particularly on materials such as SiGe, GeSn, and SiGeSn, which possess unique bandgap properties suited for applications like environmental sensing, gas detection, and medical diagnostics. These materials, compatible with standard silicon processes, offer significant potential for integration into existing semiconductor platforms. The ability of materials such as GeSn, SiGe and SiGeSn to be integrated with standard silicon processes further increases their potential for widespread adoption. The IR spectrum, essential for spectroscopy and chemical sensing, has seen improved device performance through advancements in materials engineering and device optimization, leading to enhanced sensitivity, resolution, and efficiency. SiGe, GeSn, SiGeSn has emerged as a promising material with optoelectronic properties in the infrared, with the potential of replacing expensive III-V technology for on-chip Si photonics. In the last decade, the problems of germanium-based materials have been solved successfully. The potential optoelectronic applications (light detection, ranging devices and lasers) of Ge-based materials are mostly studied. However, there are some mechanisms to deeply understand and control of material properties to improve performance of Ge-based devices for commercialisation. The electronic properties, doping concentration, carrier lifetime and mobility of these materials are determined the performance of optoelectronic devices. In this thesis we investigated these parameters and effects on dedector parameters.
