One of the most important challenges facing transition to renewable and sustainable hydrogen energy nowadays is the need for a convenient storage medium at ambient conditions. Formic Acid (FA) offers a stable liquid chemical structure to store green hydrogen and release it on demand in a cost-effective process. In order to maintain efficient Formic Acid Dehydrogenation (FADH), highly active, robust, stable and selective new catalysts should be investigated. In the scope of this thesis, highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts with both thermo- and photo- catalytic activities were aimed to be developed and synthesized for effective formic acid dehydrogenation (FADH). The study explores a variety of titanium-based support materials, transitioning from glycolate to oxide forms, subjected to distinct synthetic and treatment conditions. Titanium Glycolate Nano-Colloids (TGNCs), mesoporous Carbon-Doped Titania (m-CDT), mesoporous titanium dioxide (m-TiO2), and Calcinated mesoporous titanium dioxide (Cal-mTiO2) were the supports utilized to anchor the active sites. Subsequently, all the synthesized supports were treated by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to introduce amine-functionalization to their surfaces in order to improve the immobilization of the active sites which in turn enhance the stability, durability, dispersion, and biocompatibility of the particles. Palladium (Pd) and Gold (Au) ultrafine nanoparticles were anchored on the surface of the amine-functionalized supports via a multi-stage in-situ precipitation technique which allowed for the uniform distribution of the active sites on the surface of the supports to yield the desired catalysts. Accordingly, these catalysts were subsequently evaluated for their efficiency in promoting FADH and their catalytic performances were examined and compared in order to choose the most effective one. Among all tested catalysts, the one supported with m-CDT and denoted as PdAu@APTES@m-CDT exhibited the best catalytic activity for the dehydrogenation of formic acid (FA) with 100% selectivity towards hydrogen in both thermo-catalytic and photo-catalytic experiments. Comprehensive characterization using the BET method was conducted to reveal the Specific Surface Area (SSA) and the average pore size of the catalyst to be 230 cm2/g , and 5.19 nm respectively. According to SEM and DLS analysis, the average particle size was revealed to be ~ 500 nm of a uniform spherical shape with a CV% of 5%. XRD results revealed the Anatase phase of the existing titanium dioxide in the structure of the catalyst and XPS analysis detected the existence of carbon in the structure of the supporting material of the catalyst. Necessary experiments were conducted to find the optimum conditions that the catalyst can function at. Further optimization studies identified the ideal operational conditions for the catalyst, under which it delivered exceptional Turnover Frequency (TOF) values of“20923.9 ”h-1 for thermo-catalysis and 1507.7 h-1 for photo-catalysis. Analysis using UV-visible spectrophotometer revealed the band gap energy of the catalyst to be 1.255 eV whereas the activation energy was calculated by constructing an Arrhenius plot depending on the experimental data to be 45.22 KJ/mol.
