Active sound masking is the application of sounds of certain frequencies and characteristics to the environment to minimize and suppress the perception of ambient sounds and distracting noises for employees in offices and similar spaces to make speech privacy and economic productivity more efficient. The need for sound masking measures emerged in the 1970s due to noise problems in open-plan offices. The need for sound masking, which came to the agenda with the architectural designs of the open-plan office concept, was included in the projects. The office designs made by the architects with the approach of the 60s, it was thought that the existing insulation techniques would be sufficient to mask the natural activities and background sounds in the office. On the other hand, it was also thought that office noises could create a motivational impulse in employees and encourage them to work. This idea proved to be untrue and was soon abandoned. It is known that office noise has negative consequences on employees in terms of physical, psychological, and confidentiality of conversations. On the other hand, this situation can also provide some advantages, especially in terms of design, production power, and cost. Among the important reasons for the preference of open-plan offices today are the saving of building materials, cost savings; and office directors to closely monitor the performance of employees and to ensure maximum economic profitability. If executive offices are designed as independent spaces, there was not much need for masking in the early periods in terms of the confidentiality of high-level conversations. Today, the number of employees in open-plan office spaces, urbanization, and the contribution of developing technologies can be quite intense. Today, it is inevitable to keep confidentiality control under control in open-plan office environments in terms of noise and high-level conversations that may adversely affect employees. The control of speech and other noise in the working environment cannot be controlled only by a few acoustic improvements to the ambient acoustics. It is not enough to provide privacy and noise control in the work environment; conversations should not be understood between people at certain distances and the physical and psychological effects on employees should be minimized. The aim of this study is to examine how active and passive sound masking systems work and to analyze the results of these masking systems on an open-plan office example by considering their relationship with acoustic design and parameters.
