This pre-test-post-test randomized controlled experimental study was conducted to determine the effects of a transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing-based intervention program on smartphone addiction and sleep quality levels in nursing students. The research universe consisted of 534 students studying at the Nursing Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Aksaray University, and the sample consisted of 80 students (40 students in each of the intervention and control groups) who scored 30 and above on the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Form, used smartphones for at least one year, and agreed to participate in the research. Transtheoretical model-based motivational interviews (individual and face-to-face interviews consisting of six sessions) were conducted with the intervention group, and no intervention was made with the control group. Data for the study were collected through the Personal Information Form, Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Stages of Change Classification Scale. Data were analysed using descriptive tests (percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, min-max values), Chi-square test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests, Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test in the SPSS 27 package program. In the pre-test data of the study, the mean scores of the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Form were 40.92±6.55 in the intervention group and 40.58±6.69 in the control group, and no statistically significant difference was found (p=0.743). After the implementation of the transtheoretical model and motivational interview-based intervention program, the mean scores of the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Form were determined as 25.85±4.35 in the intervention group and 41.75±6.26 in the control group, and the difference was found to be statistically significant (p<0.001). In the pre-test data of the study, the mean scores of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were 6.88±2.23 in the intervention group and 7.03±2.10 in the control group, and no statistically significant difference was found (p=0.891). After the implementation of the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing-based intervention program, the mean Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores in the post-test data were determined as 3.90±1.58 in the intervention group and 9.12±2.07 in the control group, and the difference was found to be statistically significant (p<0.001). The research results of the study revealed that the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing-based intervention program is an effective approach in reducing smartphone addiction and increasing sleep quality in nursing students. In line with these results, it is recommended that the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing-based intervention program be implemented by competent and competent health professionals in attempts to reduce smartphone addiction and increase sleep quality in students.
