EARLY SOVIET PERIOD BIOPOLITICAL ELEMENTS: A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF THE WORKS OF M. BULGAKOV AND Y. ZAMYATIN Şeyma KOÇER Erciyes University, Graduate School of Social Sciences Master's Thesis, August 2025 Supervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Erdem ERİNÇ ABSTRACT This study, which focuses on the Lenin and NEP periods, is a sociological investigation evaluating the social, cultural, and political foundations of the Soviet Union. Following the revolution and the establishment of the Socialist regime, the concept of the Soviet man (homo sovieticus) emerged, with the central aim of creating, on the basis of Soviet ideology, a new model of the“superior human”— industrious, disciplined, and obedient. However, the discrepancy between the theoretical and practical applications of this concept through mechanisms of power and its actual consequences is regarded as both a political and sociological problem. In this regard, the mutual interdependence of literature and sociology forms the fundamental dynamic in the examination of Yevgeny Zamyatin's We and Mikhail Bulgakov's Heart of a Dog, both of which constitute notable examples of Soviet critique. Accordingly, the ideological imperatives and outcomes of Soviet power mechanisms are assessed within the framework of domination and subjugation through Michel Foucault's theory of biopolitics, which, since the twentieth century, has come to be understood in its contemporary sense. To contextualize the influence of this theory in discourse, the concepts of power and modes of governance across different historical periods are analyzed. The discourses in the selected works are classified according to biopolitical instruments such as control over the body, economic domination, surveillance–restriction, population, and biology, and examined through the method of critical discourse analysis. In this way, the positive and negative aspects of biopolitical patterns — with their optimizing and regulatory impact on society — are evaluated within the context of Soviet-era realities. Based on the findings, it is concluded that the influence of Soviet ideology on social life was predominantly exercised through biopolitical instruments of surveillance–restriction and bodily control.
