Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine preschool students' virtual and physical robotic coding performances, engagements, perceptions, and computational thinking skills. In addition, the study aims to compare students' learning experiences in virtual and physical robotic coding environments, reveal the similarities and differences between these two environments, and determine their effects on preschool students' learning processes. Method: The study employed the triangulation design, one of the mixed method designs. The study group consisted of two groups with a total of 37 five-year-old preschool students. During the 10-week implementation process, one group used a physical robotic coding tool and the other group used a virtual robotic coding tool for the first five weeks. In the following five weeks, the tools were switched between the groups and the activities continued. The data collection tools included the Robotic Coding Performance Evaluation Rubric, the Engagement Observation Form, the Activity Perception Test, the Computational Thinking Test, and a Structured Interview Form. Findings: It was determined that there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of students' robotic coding performance, engagement, and perceptions either in the first five weeks or in the last five weeks, and that both groups maintained high and positive averages throughout the process. Regarding computational thinking skills, a gradual improvement was observed in all students; scores increased from the pre-test to the mid-test and from the mid-test to the post-test. Furthermore, the First-LegoLast-Vex group that initially participated in physical robotic coding activities achieved significantly higher post-test scores compared to the First-VexLast-Lego group that initially participated in virtual robotic coding activities. Qualitative findings revealed that students' experiences were grouped under four categories—affective, cognitive, behavioral, and social—highlighting themes such as excitement, interest, curiosity, motivation, learning, problem-solving, task completion, collaboration, and friendship, with the majority of opinions being positive. Conclusions: In preschool education, regardless of whether the implementation process begins or continues with virtual or physical robotic coding tools, and even if the tools are switched, students in both groups maintained high weekly performance levels from the beginning to the end of the process, actively participated in the learning process, remained similarly engaged in the activities, had positive perceptions toward robotic coding, and improved their computational thinking skills. These results indicate that in cases where the procurement, maintenance, and use of physical robotic tools are costly, virtual robotic coding tools can be used as an alternative, offering advantages such as accessibility, repeatability, and lower technical equipment requirements, thus providing equal opportunities for all students in preschool education.
