Özet
Bu tez, John Locke'ın İnsanın Anlama Yetisi Üzerine Bir Deneme adlı eserinde geliştirdiği dil anlayışının epistemik temellerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu çalışmada, öncelikle dil anlayışının ampirik bilgi kuramıyla olan ilişkisi irdelenecektir. Locke'a göre bilgi bu anlamda, deneyim temelli olarak zihinde oluşan idelerin bir düzen içinde kavranmasıyla oluşur. Nitekim Locke'a göre tüm bilgi, iç ve dış duyum yoluyla edinilen yalın idelere dayanır ve en karmaşık düşünceler bile bu yalın yapıların birleşiminden türetilir. Locke, dil anlayışını epistemolojisinin temel dayanağı olan ideler görüşü üzerine inşa eder. Bu noktada sözcükleri, idelerin işaretleri olarak değerlendiren Locke, dilin yalnızca iletişim aracı değil aynı zamanda bilginin paylaşımını, düzenlenmesini ve genelleştirilmesini mümkün kılan epistemolojik bir araç olduğunu savunur. Bu çalışma, Locke'ın bilgi anlayışındaki temel kavramları ideleri, soyutlamaları, nitelikleri dil felsefesiyle ilişkilendirir. Aynı zamanda onun dil anlayışının temelinde epistemolojisinin olduğunu göstermekte ve dilin, bilgi ediniminin sınırlarını belirleyen temel unsurlardan biri olarak görüldüğünü açıklamaktadır. Tezde, idelerin dil aracılığıyla bilgiye nasıl dönüştüğü ve bu dönüşümün epistemolojik sonuçları Locke'ın düşünsel çerçevesi içinde analiz edilmesi hedeflenmektedir. Bu doğrultuda da Locke'ın epistemolojisinin yalnızca bilginin kaynağına değil fakat aynı zamanda bu bilginin ifade edilme yollarına da dair özgün bir yaklaşım sunduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.

This thesis aims to examine the epistemic foundations of John Locke's conception of language as developed in his An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. The study will first explore the relationship between Locke's view of language and his empirical theory of knowledge. For Locke, knowledge arises through the ordering of ideas that are formed in the mind based on experience. Indeed, according to Locke, all knowledge rests on simple ideas acquired through sensation and reflection, and even the most complex thoughts are derived from the combination of these simple structures. Locke builds his conception of language upon his theory of ideas, which constitutes the cornerstone of his epistemology. At this point, Locke regards words as signs of ideas and maintains that language is not merely a tool of communication but also an epistemological instrument that makes possible the sharing, organization, and generalization of knowledge. This study relates the key concepts in Locke's theory of knowledge, ideas, abstractions, and qualities to his philosophy of language. At the same time, it demonstrates that the foundation of his view of language lies in his epistemology and explains that language is regarded as one of the fundamental elements that define the limits of knowledge acquisition. The thesis aims to analyses how ideas are transformed into knowledge through language and the epistemological implications of this transformation within Locke's intellectual framework. In this respect, it seeks to show that Locke's epistemology offers a distinctive approach not only to the source of knowledge but also to the ways in which this knowledge is expressed.
