Özet
Bu çalışma, Erken Cumhuriyet Dönemi (1923-1938) lise tarih ders kitaplarında sosyal Darwinizm etkisini incelemektedir. Sosyal Darwinizm, biyolojik evrim teorisinin sosyal bilimlere uyarlanmasıyla ortaya çıkan bir kavram olup, toplumlar arasındaki rekabetin ve gücün hayatta kalmadaki rolünü vurgulamaktadır. Bu tez, dönemin resmi tarih anlatısının, sosyal Darwinist düşüncelerle ne ölçüye kadar ilişkili olduğunu anlamak amacıyla hazırlanmıştır. Araştırmada tarihsel doküman incelemesi yöntemi kullanılmış olup, 1923-1938 yılları arasında basılan lise tarih ders kitapları içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Dönemin eğitim politikaları, ders kitaplarının yazım süreçleri ve sosyal Darwinist düşüncenin Osmanlı'dan Cumhuriyet'e mirası ele alınarak çözümlenmiştir. Aynı zamanda dönemin siyasal ve ideolojik atmosferi de analiz edilerek, ders kitaplarındaki tarihsel anlatının toplumsal öğretiye etkisi değerlendirilmiştir. Bu bağlamda, antropoloji disiplininin Cumhuriyet dönemi eğitim sisteminde nasıl konumlandırıldığı ve insan topluluklarının evrimsel süreçler bağlamında nasıl ele alındığı da incelenmiştir. Araştırma sonuçları, Erken Cumhuriyet Dönemi lise tarih ders kitaplarında sosyal Darwinist öğelerin belirgin bir şekilde yer aldığını göstermektedir. Tarih anlatısında, Osmanlı'dan miras kalan toplumsal yapının eleştirildiği, modernleşme sürecine vurgu yapıldığı ve batılılaşmanın önemli bir hedef olarak belirlendiği tespit edilmiştir. Ders kitaplarında, ulus inşa sürecinde“en uygunun hayatta kalması”fikrinin, ilerlemeci bir tarih anlayışıyla bağdaştırılarak ele alındığı görülmüştür. Aynı zamanda, dönemin siyasal liderliğinin modernleşme ve ulus inşa sürecinde sosyal Darwinist görüşleri dolaylı olarak desteklediği sonucuna varılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, bu tez, erken Cumhuriyet'in eğitim ve tarih anlatısına sosyal Darwinizm perspektifinden bir bakış sunarak, dönemin ideolojik temellerinin daha iyi anlaşılmasına katkı sağlamaktadır.

This study examines the influence of Social Darwinism in high school history textbooks during the Early Republican Period (1923-1938). Social Darwinism is a concept that emerged from the adaptation of the theory of biological evolution to social sciences, emphasizing competition among societies and the role of power in survival. This thesis aims to understand the extent to which the official historical narrative of the period was related to Social Darwinist ideas. The research employs a historical document analysis method, subjecting high school history textbooks published between 1923 and 1938 to content analysis. The study evaluates the education policies of the period, the writing processes of textbooks, and the legacy of Social Darwinist thought from the Ottoman era to the Republic. Additionally, the political and ideological atmosphere of the period is analyzed to assess the impact of historical narratives on social education. In this context, the positioning of the discipline of anthropology within the education system of the Republican period and how human communities were interpreted in the context of evolutionary processes were also examined. The research findings indicate that Social Darwinist elements were distinctly present in high school history textbooks during the Early Republican Period. The historical narrative criticizes the inherited social structure from the Ottoman era, emphasizes the modernization process, and identifies Westernization as a significant goal. The textbooks integrate the idea of“survival of the fittest”into a progressive historical understanding, linking it to nation-building efforts. Moreover, the study concludes that the political leadership of the period indirectly supported Social Darwinist perspectives in the modernization and nation-building processes. In conclusion, this thesis provides a Social Darwinist perspective on the education and historical narrative of the Early Republican Period, contributing to a better understanding of the ideological foundations of the era.
