Özet

Sanatçılar bildiğimiz tarihin her çağında var oldular. Onların sanat algıları sıklıkla içinde bulundukları zamanı ve durumu yansıtmaktadır. Zamanları ve durumları ise genellikle bir ya da iki felsefi söylemle alakalıdır. Sanatçının içerisinde bulunduğu kötü durum bir sıkışma durumudur. Yine de postmodernizim ortaya çıktığında şeyi değiştirdi. Bu zaman dilimindeki sanatçının bu kötü hali çarpıtılıp dağıtılır. Postmodernizim her şeyi sorgular. Postmodernistlerin felsefi söylemleri hem entellektüeller hem sıradaki insan bulunabilecek bir gerçek ortaya atılmıştır. Postmodern sanatçıların ürünlerini ve ortaya koyuş tarzlarını anlamak oldukça zor bir iş olmasının yanında çok fazla önem katkı da bulunabilir. Bu tez postmodern sanatçıların içerisinde bulunduğu ruh halini ele aldı. Bu tez sanatçının içerisinde bulunduğu ruh halini anlamak için Edmund Wilson'ın sanatçının ruh hali teorisini kullandı. Wilson bu teoriyi 1941'de yazmış olduğu 'The Wound and the Bow' kitabında öne sürdü. Yine bu teoriyle birlikte tez, psikoanalizi kullandı. Bu tezdeki psikoanalizin odağında Jung'ın örneklemleri ve kolektif bilinçsizlik vardır. Wilson'ın ve Jung'ın teorileri analiz etmede bir araç olarak kullanılırken, bu tez Pinter'ın The Birthday Party'sini, Williams'ın Suddenly Last Summer'ını ve Barker'ın Scenes from an Execution'ı incelemiştir. Bu üç oyun geçmiş günümüz ve olası herhangi bir gelecek zamandilimindeki rastgele bir zaman dilimindeki sanatçı ile postmodern sanatçının ruh halini hipnotize etmek için kullanıldı.

Throughout every era of known history, artists have existed. Their art form often reflects their state and time. The state and time are generally within one or two philosophical discourses. The artist's plight is compacted. However, Postmodernism came along and changed everything. The plight of the artist in this era is convoluted and dispersed. The postmodernists questioned everything. Their philosophical discourses are as grounded for the bystanders as scholarly for the intellectuals. Understanding the postmodernists' artistic production or form is rather a laborious taskö but at the same time highly crucial. This dissertation explored the plight of the postmodern artist. In order to understand the plight of the artist, the dissertation used Edmund Wilson's theory of the plight of the artist. Wilson asserts his theory of the plight of the artist in his 1941 The Wound and the Bow. Alongside Wilson's theory of the plight of the artist, the dissertation used psychoanalysis. The focus of psychoanalysis in the dissertation was on Jung's archetype and the collective unconscious. While Wilson and Jung's theories are the tool of the analysis, the dissertation analyzed Pinter's The Birthday Party, Williams's Suddenly Last Summer, and Barker's Scenes from an Execution. The three plays were used to hypothesize the plight of the postmodern artists and artists of any given era; the past, present, and possible future.
