Earthquakes, recognized as one of the most damaging natural catastrophes, have repeatedly caused catastrophic damage and left lasting scars throughout human history. Their devastating effects are not confined to the past; rather, they are anticipated to continue posing significant threats in the future as well. Beyond causing considerable loss of life, earthtquakes also lead to severe economic distruption, widespread financial crises, and profound disturbances in the social fabric of affected communities. This reality clearly underscores the ongoing and future relevance of seismic hazards. Over time, scientific and engineering based approaches focusing on seismic performance, particularly regarding the interaction between earthquakes, structures, and soil, have been continiously develope, leading to substantial advancements in the area of seismic engineering. Throughout history, significant progress has been achieved in both the formulation and enhancement of seismic design codes, as well as in the proliferation of academic research dedicated to the development earthquake resistant building systems. Such efforts have collectively contributed to improving the resilience and safety of the built environment against future seismic events. The fundamental philosophy underlying the concept of earthquake resistant building structural design is based on ensuring that structures are capable of withstanding seismic events of varying intensities with appropriate levels of performance. Specifically, structures are expected to suffer little to no damage during frequent, low intensity earthquakes, experience only repairable damage during moderate earthquakes during rare but severe seismic events, maintain their overall stability without collapsing, thereby safeguarding the lives of occupants. This performance based approach aims to minimize not only human casualties but also the potential for extensive economic and social disruption. The 1994 Northridge earthquake in the United States and the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan served as critical milestones in the development of this philosophy. These devastating events not only caused widespread physical destruction and significant loss of life but also underscored the inadequacies of traditional seismic design approaches. In their aftermath, the concept of performance based earthquake engineering began to take shape, promoting the idea that structures should be designed to satisfy distinct performance objectives corresponding to different seismic hazard levels. This paradigm shift emphasized the necessity for a more nuanced understanding of structural behavior under earthquake loading and laid the groundwork for the modern methodologies employed in seismic design and assessment today. It, examines the structural behavior during different earthquake scenarios and the condition of the building after the earthquakes, allowing for the assessment of how well these criteria are fulfilled. In this context, it is evident that the validity of performance based earthquake engineering can only be ensured through nonlinear analyses. The ability of nonlinear analysis methods to give a more precise and realistic representation of structural behavior under seismic actions has exposed significant shortcomings of traditional linear analysis techniques, thus clearly emphasizing the inevitability of adopting a performance based design philosophy. Nevertheless, despite their undeniable advantages in capturing the inelastic response of structures, nonlinear analysis methods have often led to reservations due to their inherent computational complexity, the extensive amount of input data required, and the prolonged analysis times they entail. Within this context, the necessity has arisen for the development and application of an analysis methodology that on the one hand can reliably estimate the stiffness, strength, and ductility capacities of structural systems along with the expected ductility demands under seismic loads, and on the other hand, can adequately address uncertainties in modeling and seismic input data without resulting in an excessively intricate or impractical computational process. Such a methodology is crucial for enabling a more realistic, yet sufficiently efficient, seismic design of structures, thereby bridging the gap between accuracy and practical applicability in engineering practice. The studies related to the N2 method, which is employed within the scope of this thesis to address the two fundamental needs mentioned above, were initiated in the 1980s. The conceptual foundation of the N2 method emerged from the Q-model introduced by Saiidi and Sozen (1981). This Q-model is fundamentally based on two major simplifications: the ''reduction of a multi degree of freedom structural model to an equivalent single degree of freedom model'' and the ''representation of the structure's variable incremental stiffness properties by a nonlinear spring''. In the N2 method, the letter ''N'' denotes ''Nonlinear'', while the number ''2'' signifies the utilization of two different mathematical models. The final form of the method was established by Fajfar and Gašperšič through a series of conducted until 1996. The primary objective behind the development of the N2 method was to create a practical and sufficiently accurate analysis procedure by striking a balance between the simplicity of traditional methods which assume linear elastic structural behavior but fail to accurately reflect the true seismic performance of structures and the higher accuracy yet impractical complexity of nonlinear time history analysis methods. However, the N2 method provides reliable results primarily for structures in which higher mode effects are negligible, rather than for tall, irregular, or asymmetric buildings where such effects are significant. This implies that the method is essentially applicable to structures whose seismic response is predominantly governed by the first mode. Therefore, in the case of irregular, tall, or asymmetric structures where higher mode contributions play a significant role the accuracy of the method may be limited due to its inability to fully capture the impact of the higher mode effects. To overcome these limitations, and extended version of the N2 method was proposed by Fajfar et al. (2005), which incorporates higher mode effects in plan and can ve applied to asymmetric structures. More recently, Kreslin and Fajfar (2012) further developed the method by accounting for higher mode effects in vertical (elevation) direction as well. The major distinction of this newly developed approach compared to the original N2 method lies in its consideration factors derived from elastic modal analysis and nonlinear static (pushover) analysis. This allows for more consistent and reliable results, particularly for structures where higher mode effects are quite important. Another analytical approach adopted within the scope of this thesis is the incremental dynamic analysis method. This method allows a detailed investigation of the structural response to earthquake ground motions that are gradually intensified, covering the entire behavior range from the initial elastic response to the onset of structural collapse. In the ıncremental dynamic analysis procedure, selected ground motion acceleration records are progressively scaled using predefined scaling criteria. During this process, the intensity of the seismic excication is increased by amplifying the amplitude of the records while preserving their original characteristics. In this way, changes in structural performance under different levels of seismic demand and various earthquake ground motions can be systematically examined. Within the scope of this thesis, a static pushover analysis was first applied to the Spear structure, which is an irregular building that has been extensively investigated in previous studies, in order to obtain roof displacement and interstorey drift demands using the N2 method. Based on the data collected, the standart N2 method was used along with the extended N2 method, which is better at taking into account irregularity effects, to measure seismic performance. The results were then compared. The primary reason for selecting the Spear structure was to ensure calibration of the SeismoStruct software used throughout the analyses. Following this stage, the N2 and extended N2 methods were applied to three additional structures exhibiting different types of irregularities as defined in EuroCode 8, and the corresponding results were then compared with those obtained from incremental dynamic analysis. The Spear structure constist of three storeys, and material properties corresponding to C16 concrete and S420 reinforcing steel were adopted. The irregularity indices of the structure were calculated based on the provisions of Eurocode 8. The remaining three structures are four story buildings, for which material properties corresponding to C16 concrete and S420 reinforcing steel were adopted. Unlike conventional concrete models, these structures were modeled using degrading material formulations that account for both stiffness and strength deterioration. The main objeective of this modeling approach is to realistically capture the degradation in stiffness and strength occuring at the element level during earthquake sequences involving foreshocks, mainshocks, and aftershocks. Irregularity parameters in both the X and Y directions were determined in accordance with the provisons of Eurocode 8, with eccentricities, torsional effects, and radii of gyration calculated separately for each direction. Incremental dynamic analyses were performed along the weak structural direction of the buildings. Based on these analyses, roof displacements, interstorey drifts, as well as residual displacements observed after the mainshock and subsequent aftershocks were evaluated. In addition, ıncremental dynamic analysis curves and the corresponding fragility curves of the structures were derived. The roof displacements and interstorey drift demands obtained from the N2 and extended N2 methods were then compared with the results of the nonlinear time history analyses. For the all structures, which exhibit different types of irregularities and were subjected to Incremental dynamic analysis, earthquake records from the 11 March 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan, with a moment magnitude (Mw) of 9.0, were utilized. In addition, several strong aftershocks associated with this event were considered, including the Mw 7.7 earthquake on 11 March 2011, the Mw 7.1 earthquake on 7 April 2011, and the Mw 7.0 earthquake on 11 April 2011. The Tohoku earthquake is not only recognized as one of the largest seismic events in modern history, but also represents a rather unique earthquake sequence when evaluated together with its foreshocks and aftershocks. During the selection of ground motion records, factors such as near fault effects, pulse type ground motions, and soil liquefaction were intentionally excluded from consideration. Moreover, records with shear wave velocity values in the upper 30 m of the soil profile (Vs,30) ranging between 360 and 800 m/s were selected. To further limit the set of records used within the scope of the thesis, peak ground acceleration (PGA) values were constrained to the range of 0.2g to 0.8g. The ground motion records corresponding to the Tohoku earthquakes were obtained from the Japan Meteorological Agency. The structural models were developed using the SeismoStruct software, and all structural analyses presented in the thesis were carried out within this platform. The results obtained from these analyses were subsequently processed and visualized using Microsoft Excel in order to facilitate interpretation and evaluation. From a general evaluation of the thesis, it can be observed that for structures exhibiting different types of irregularities, initially applies the conventional N2 method, which only looks at the first vibration mode of the structure, followed by the extended N2 method, which also accounts for higher mode effects, to all structural models. The structures were modeled with a material model that included stiffness and strength degradation. An incremental dynamic analysis was then done to show how the structure's response changes from the elastic range to collapse. Consequently, structural responses, incremental dynamic analysis curves, and fragility curves were derived. This way, the probabilistic behavior structures with different levels of irregularity at different levels of spectral accelerationas was found. Finally, the results from the conventional N2 and extended N2 methods were compared to those from time-history analysis and incremental dynamic analysis to see how accurate the methods were.
