This study evaluates the philosophy of Gabriel Marcel, one of the most important philosophers of the twentieth century, on an ontological and ethical plane that makes it possible to understand the increasingly deepening spiritual crisis of the contemporary world as it takes on a technocratic character. As a thinker who deliberately avoids systematic philosophy, Marcel is a philosopher who constructs his ideas around the distinction between“problem”and“mystery”and places presence, authenticity, fidelity, and hope at the center of his thought. He conceives the human being not as a problem domain that can be resolved by technical reason, but as a realm of mystery that comes to the fore only through lived experience and can reach its own depths in intersubjectivity. From this perspective, his philosophy offers an existential and personal outlook that aims to preserve the integrity of the bonds human beings establish with themselves, with others, and with transcendence. In this ontological context, Marcel argues that in the modern era the fact that science—and technology in particular—has become determinative of everything at an uncontrollable speed has deepened problems such as nuclear threat, war, the loss of humanity's ontological dignity, and ecological destruction. This has made it necessary to reconsider the question of whether technology exhibits an ethical attitude. However, Marcel addresses this problem not so much through technology itself as through its absolutization and its transformation into a mindset. According to Marcel, the modern world suffers from a disease that exhausts and consumes the human being: the spirit of abstraction. Nourished by greed and boundlessness, the spirit of abstraction severs the human being from concrete existence and reduces the person to a measurable, classifiable object. For Marcel, who witnessed two world wars, one of the fundamental indicators of the spirit of abstraction is the loss of humanity's ontological dignity, and another is war. When the technological spirit is absolutized, life is devalued and loses its sacredness. To the extent that what is sacred in the human being is denied, the human being can be used like a machine. In this context, the reduction of the human being to an object, an object of production, and a technical instrument emerges, in Marcel's words, as the new slavery of the twentieth century—that is, the slavery of the technocratic system. Historically, the human being has established a direct relationship with nature and developed techniques in order to overcome problems encountered in relation to it. Over time, however, this relationship has given rise not to a holistic form of production but to an increasingly fragmented world. In the modern age, technology has gone far beyond being a mere instrument for human beings and, by becoming an authority, has turned into an idol. This has weakened the autonomy of the human being as a dignified being and has placed human existence in jeopardy. The human being, as a being of mystery, has been stripped of the metaphysical dimension and has come to be treated almost as a problem in a world dominated by abstraction. These statements should not be understood that Marcel is against to technology. He is certainly not against a technology that facilitates human life and contributes to production; rather, what he finds unacceptable is technology's encompassing of all domains of human existence and its transformation of the human being into a merely“technical human.”The technological mentality relegates concreteness, truth, fidelity to being, sincere relationships, authenticity, and the dignity of being human to the background, while absolutizing abstraction, technique, and measurability—thereby fostering alienation. The conclusion reached by this study is that Marcel's critique of technology should not be interpreted as a simple reductionist opposition to technology. Rather, it emphasizes his important insistence that, in a technological world, human beings must safeguard values such as fidelity, presence, participation, concreteness, ontological value and dignity, dialogue, and hope, and must not confuse means and ends.
