İçindeki İsmâil'i, yani benliği ve gururu feda ederek Allah'a teslim olmak, bu kıssanın tasavvufî boyutunu ortaya koyar. İbrâhim'in kıssasına dair ilgili âyetlerin mânasını kavramaya çalıştık. Hz. İbrâhim hakkında pek çok çalışma yapılmış olmasına rağmen, Rûhu'l-Beyân bağlamında hazırlanmış müstakil bir araştırma yoktur. Çalışmamız bu alanda mevcut boşluğu dodurmaya yöneliktir.
Özet (Çeviri)
Allah Almighty presents the stories of Prophet Abraham in the Qur'an across many surahs with various dimensions. These stories emerge as some of the most striking examples of the struggle for monotheism. However, it should be noted that these narratives are not transmitted merely as historical data. On the contrary, they carry profound meanings in terms of faith, morality, and spiritual teachings. One of the most significant representatives of the Sufi exegetical tradition, Ismāʿīl Ḥaqqī Bursevī (ö. 1137/1725), in his work Rūḥ al-Bayān, interprets the stories of Prophet Abraham both in their outward (ẓāhir) and inward (bāṭin) dimensions. In his approach, Abraham is not only a prophet who lived in a historical context but also a figure symbolizing the spiritual journey of one nurtured under the guidance of a spiritual master. From an outward perspective, Abraham's stories stand as the clearest evidence of the struggle for monotheism and the distinction between truth and falsehood. His breaking of the idols and his confrontation with the polytheistic society demonstrate his role as a prophet who proclaims the truth. His dialogue with his father reflects the conflict between family ties and faith, underlining that faith surpasses human relations and that servitude to God is the highest value. In this sense, within a mystical framework, the idolatrous father represents the carnal desire (hawā) that diverts a person from truth, whereas Abraham represents genuine submission to God with a sound heart. Thus, his debate with his father points to the inner conflict between the lower self and the heart within the spiritual seeker. Abraham's reasoning through celestial bodies, outwardly, constitutes a rational proof presented to his people. His reflection on the star, the moon, and the sun serves as a logical argument agains**t polytheism. Inwardly, however, this reasoning symbolizes the spiritual journey of the heart: the star representing the self, the moon the heart, and the sun the illumination of the soul by the Divine light. His being cast into the fire is, on the one hand, a trial against the oppression of the idolaters, and on the other, an allegory of the trial by the fire of the lower self. Through surrender and patience, the seeker experiences divine grace, transforming the fire into peace and safety. Likewise, the glad tidings of Isaac and Jacob are interpreted as spiritual glad tidings born in the heart. The angels visiting Abraham's household are seen as lights of gnosis descending into the heart. The episode of sacrifice carries one of the deepest symbolic meanings. Abraham's offering of his son signifies the seeker's liberation from the chains of the ego, worldly attachments, and pride. Sacrificing the“inner Ishmael,”namely the self and arrogance, is interpreted as complete submission to God. Similarly, the breaking of idols is not limited to destroying statues of wood and stone, but also serves as a warning against the idolization of carnal desires, love of wealth, ambition for position, and craving for fame. Abraham's striking down of the idols with an axe symbolizes the seeker's destruction of inner idols through remembrance (dhikr) and spiritual discipline (riyāḍa). Thus, Bursevī interprets the stories of Abraham not only within their historical context and outward meanings but also with a mystical depth. This approach represents the intersection between the classical exegetical tradition and Sufi interpretation. The stories of Abraham both establish monotheism with rational and persuasive proofs and function as a guide for the seeker's spiritual life. Ultimately, the narratives of Abraham in the Qur'an recount the struggles of a historical prophet while simultaneously illuminating the inner journey of the human being. For this reason, his life serves as a model guiding both the path of reason and the path of the heart. In this study, we aimed to grasp the meanings of the relevant verses concerning Abraham in Ismāʿīl Ḥaqqī Bursevī's Rūḥ al-Bayān, which comes from the esoteric tafsīr tradition.
