Özet
Bu çalışmada Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'ndaki ilk genel ansiklopediyi tespit etmek amacıyla literatürde adı sıkça zikredilen ansiklopedik eserler incelenmiştir. Avrupa'da ortaya çıkan ansiklopediler 19. yüzyılda Osmanlılar tarafından ihtiyaç duyulan bir yayın türü olmuştur. Şemsettin Sami'nin“en ziyade muhtaç olduğumuz kitap”diye nitelediği gibi ansiklopedi, Osmanlı münevverinin bir meselesi haline gelmiş, bu dönemde ansiklopedi hazırlıkları başlamıştır. Tezin ilk bölümünde ansiklopedik eserlerin ortaya çıktığı şartları ve ansiklopedi ihtiyacını anlamak için Osmanlı münevverinin durumu, yayın faaliyetlerindeki gelişmeler ve konuyla bağlantılı olarak Türkçenin geçirdiği dönüşüm irdelenmiştir. Devamında ilk genel ansiklopedi girişimi olan Muhitü'l-Maarif'in mimarı Emrullah Efendi'nin entelektüel biyografisi ve ilmi hedefleri dikkate alınmıştır. İkinci bölümde ansiklopedi kavramı, tarihi gelişimi ve Muhitü'l-Maarif ansiklopedisinin serüveni anlatılmıştır. Muhitü'l-Maarif'in forma forma neşrinden evvel ansiklopedi üzerine çıkarılan Yeni Muhitü'l-Maarif gazetesi incelenmiş, Osmanlı'daki girişimler içinde en teferruatlı ansiklopedi fikrini haiz olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Dolayısıyla tezin üçüncü bölümünde yedi sayılık Yeni Muhitü'l-Maarif gazetesinin transkripsiyonuna yer verilmiştir.

This study examines encyclopaedic works frequently cited in the literature with the aim of identifying the first general encyclopaedia in the Ottoman Empire. Encyclopaedias emerging in Europe became a publication type required by the Ottomans in the 19th century. As Şemsettin Sami described it as 'the book we need most,' the encyclopaedia became a matter of concern for Ottoman intellectuals, and preparations for an encyclopaedia began during this period. The first section of the thesis examines the conditions under which encyclopedic works emerged, the situation of Ottoman intellectuals, developments in publishing activities, and the transformation of the Turkish language in relation to the subject, in order to understand the need for encyclopedias. Afterwards, the intellectual biography and scientific goals of Emrullah Efendi, the architect of the first general encyclopaedia initiative, Muhitü'l-Maarif, are considered. The second chapter discusses the concept of encyclopaedia, its historical development, and the journey of the Muhitü'l-Maarif encyclopaedia. The Yeni Muhitü'l-Maarif newspaper, published prior to the publication of Muhitü'l-Maarif, is examined, and it is understood that it contained the most detailed encyclopedic ideas among the initiatives in the Ottoman Empire. Therefore, the third chapter of the thesis includes a transcription of the seven issues of the Yeni Muhitü'l-Maarif newspaper.
