Hediyeler, Venedik'in Osmanlı misyonu çerçevesinde kullandığı diplomatik araçlardan biriydi.

The relations between the Ottoman Empire and Venice, whose legal framework was defined by the ahdnames, were maintained in a state of peace and friendship, interrupted only by limited periods of warfare, until the fall of the Serenissima Republic in 1797. In order to sustain its presence and commercial interests in the Mediterranean, the Republic of Venice advanced its diplomatic relations by prioritizing the preservation of peace with the Ottoman Empire. Gift-giving constituted one of the primary diplomatic tools utilized by Venice as part of its Ottoman mission. The baili and ambassadors sent to İstanbul served as the executors of diplomatic relations and the intermediaries responsible for the presentation of gifts. Venice presented gifts to the sultan, the grand vizier, and high-ranking officials in Istanbul through its representatives. Similarly, a custom was established in the frontier regions where Stato da Mar administrators presented gifts to the sanjak beys and to chief admiral of Ottoman Navy during naval expeditions. This thesis investigates the customary gift-giving practices of Venice toward the Ottoman court and frontiers in the third quarter of the 16th century, exploring the material culture and historical value of the objects presented. Furthermore, by categorizing the requests made by Ottoman officials, notably the grand vizier, to the bailo in İstanbul as formal orders, the study examines their significance within the Venetian diplomatic gift-giving system. The study aims to reveal the role, impact, and material culture value of the objects requested as orders within the framework of Ottoman–Venetian cultural exchange.
