This research was conducted to investigate the association between FokI (rs2228570) and BsmI (rs1544410) polymorphisms in the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) gene and aerobic and anaerobic performance capacities in athletes. A total of 150 volunteer athletes (77 female, 73 male) aged 18-30 years, with a mean sports history of 8.4±3.4 years and without any acute or chronic injuries, were included in the study. Participants completed three separate laboratory visits. During the first visit, demographic data were recorded and informed consent was obtained. The Wingate anaerobic power test (Watt/kg) was administered during the second visit, and the YMCA submaximal aerobic capacity test (VO₂max) was conducted during the third visit. Following the performance evaluations, saliva samples were collected and analyzed for genotyping. Performance results were divided into quartiles (Q1-Q4) for both parameters, and genotype and allele frequencies were compared across these groups. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square test with Jamovi 2.6.44 software. The findings revealed a statistically significant association between the VDR FokI polymorphism and both aerobic and anaerobic performance levels (p<0.001). The CC genotype and C allele were significantly more frequent in the highest performance group (Q4), whereas the TT genotype and T allele were associated with the lowest performance group (Q1). In contrast, no significant differences were observed in the genotype distribution of the BsmI polymorphism across performance groups. In conclusion, it has been determined that the VDR FokI polymorphism is associated with high-level aerobic endurance and anaerobic power capacity and may provide a genetic advantage in terms of performance efficiency in young athletes.
