Özet
Bu çalışma, çağdaş sanatsal akımlar ve eleştirel kuramların karmaşıklığı içerisinde, metamodernizmin geleneği yeniden değerlendirmeyi, yeniliği ve yeniden sahiplenmeyi teşvik etmeyi ve yerleşik kültürel paradigmaları ile edebi türleri—özellikle Bildungsroman'ı—yeniden şekillendirmeyi amaçlayan önemli kültürel ve edebi öncüller geliştirdiğini ileri sürmektedir. Çalışma, bu roman türünün yalnızca postmodern normlara meydan okumakla kalmadığını, aynı zamanda neo-romantik, neoliberal ve post-ironik Bildungsroman gibi metamodern alt türler geliştirerek kendisini yeniden icat ettiğini savunmaktadır. Bu dönüşümü göstermek amacıyla, farklı kültürel bağlamlardan (Nijerya, Türkiye, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ve İngiltere) seçilmiş dört roman incelenmektedir. Bu eserler, metamodern estetiğin yirmi birinci yüzyılda kimlik oluşumu ilkesinin tematik ve anlatısal sunumunu nasıl yaratıcı biçimde yeniden yapılandırdığını ortaya koymaktadır: Chigozie Obioma'nın The Fishermen'ı, Peter Ackroyd'un Three Brothers'ı, Orhan Pamuk'un A Strangeness in My Mind'ı ve Jeffrey Eugenides'in The Marriage Plot'u. Kuramsal ve yöntemsel izleği bakımından bu tez, ilk bölümünde Timotheus Vermeulen ve Robin van den Akker tarafından temsil edilen Hollanda Ekolü'nün metamodernizm anlayışını benimsemekte ve tartışmaktadır. Yeni ortaya çıkan bu kuramın postmodern estetiğin gerileyişini nasıl kronikleştirdiği ve metamodern duyarlılıkların yükselişini nasıl teşvik ettiği ortaya konulduktan sonra, çalışma Bildungsroman'ın antik kökenlerinden on dokuzuncu yüzyıldaki (özellikle Viktorya dönemindeki) gelişimine ve post-postmodernite bağlamında metamodern dönüşümüne uzanan kapsamlı bir edebiyat tarihi incelemesi sunmaktadır. Bu çağdaş dönüşüm üç eksende gerçekleşmektedir: neo-romantizm, neoliberalizm ve post-ironi. Dolayısıyla çalışmanın kuramsal çerçevesi, metamodernite içinde ortaya çıkan bu üç alt türü tanımlamakta; her birinin, metamodern salınımsal ikiliklerin etkileşimi aracılığıyla benlik oluşumu sürecini yeniden yapılandırdığını ileri sürmektedir. Sonraki bölümlerde ise dört farklı roman, metinsel ve bağlamsal düzeyde incelenerek bildung'un metinselleştirilme biçimleri pratik olarak ele alınmaktadır. Buna göre ikinci bölüm, iki kurmaca eser üzerinden neo-romantik Bildungsroman'ı incelemektedir. Bölümün ilk kısmı, Chigozie Obioma'nın The Fishermen adlı romanına odaklanmakta ve başkahraman Ben'in kimlik oluşumunu romantik kuramlar çerçevesinde analiz etmektedir. William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley ve John Keats'e yapılan göndermeler aracılığıyla, Ben'in anımsama, hayal gücü ve romantik ilkelere duyulan yeniden canlanmış ilgi sayesinde metamodern, neo-romantik bir özneye dönüşümü ortaya konulmaktadır. Bölümün ikinci kısmı ise Peter Ackroyd'un Three Brothers adlı romanını psikocoğrafya ve antikacılık kavramları çerçevesinde incelemektedir. Bu yaklaşım, kentsel çevrenin, anımsama ve bireysellikle birlikte, üç farklı başkahramanın erginleşme süreçlerini nasıl şekillendirdiğini göstermektedir: Byronvari kahraman-kötü figürü temsil eden Harry; oluşum süreci metamodern bir Künstlerroman örneği olarak okunabilecek Daniel; ve neo-romantik bir flâneur ile Ackroyd'un Londra'sının bir genius loci'si olarak beliren Sam. Her iki roman bağlamında da analiz, metamodernizmin romantik mirası nasıl benimsediğini, dönüştürdüğünü ve yeniden yorumladığını; böylece hem tarihsel geleneğe hem de çağdaş sorunlara hitap eden neo-romantik bir Bildungsroman biçimi yarattığını göstermektedir. Üçüncü bölüm, Orhan Pamuk'un A Strangeness in My Mind adlı romanında neoliberal Bildungsroman'ı incelemekte ve metamodern girişimcilik anlatılarını ele almaktadır. Girişimci öznenin ortaya çıkışı ve postmodern neoliberalizmden metamodern, samimi bir kapitalizm anlayışına geçişin temsili, Mevlut'un kimlik oluşum süreci üzerinden aktarılmaktadır; bu süreçte kişisel inisiyatif ve içtenlik, piyasa odaklı değerleri yeniden tanımlamaktadır. Dördüncü bölüm ise Jeffrey Eugenides'in The Marriage Plot adlı romanında post-ironik Bildungsroman'ı incelemekte; postmodern ironiden metamodern post-ironiye ve yeni bir post-postmodern içtenliğin ortaya çıkışına uzanan süreci izlemektedir. Bu bağlamda ironi, yeni bir samimiyet ve sahici duygusal ifade aracı olarak yeniden işlevselleştirilmektedir. Son olarak, incelenen dört edebi eser romantik ve Viktorya dönemi öncülleriyle ve bazı modern ile postmodern yöntemlerle karşılaştırmalı olarak ele alınarak, metamodern Bildungsroman'ın yalnızca postmodernizmin sınırlarına yönelik bir eleştiri olmadığı; aynı zamanda kimlik, özgünlük, samimiyet ve aidiyet kavramlarına dair yenilenmiş bir kültürel anlayışı ortaya koyduğu gösterilmektedir. Karşılaştırmalı bir analiz aracılığıyla bu araştırma, metamodernizmin Bildungsroman'ı şekillendirme ve yeniden tanımlama sürecindeki rolünü kuramsal ve eleştirel bir biçimde incelemekte; aynı zamanda metamodern Bildungsroman'ın postmodern versiyonundan hangi açılardan ayrıştığını ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çerçevede çalışma, postmodernizmin bildung'u kuramsallaştırma ve temalaştırma konusundaki sınırlılıklarını gösterirken; metamodern Bildungsroman'ın anlatı tekniklerini ve biçimsel tercihlerini incelemekte ve postmodernite ile onun metamodern dönüşümünün edebiyatta kimlik oluşumunu yansıtma üzerindeki yaratıcı etkisini ortaya koymaktadır.

This present study argues that amid the complexity of contemporary artistic movements and critical theories, metamodernism has built up prominent cultural and literary premises striving to re-evaluate tradition, prompt novelty and appropriation, and influence or reshape the established cultural conceptions and literary genres, among which the Bildungsroman. This study also shows that this novelistic genre not only challenges postmodern norms but also reinvents itself via developing metamodern subgenres such as the neo-romantic, neoliberal, and post-ironic Bildungsromane. To this end, four novels, each from a different cultural background (Nigeria, Türkiye, USA, and England), have been chosen to illustrate how metamodern aesthetics transforms creatively the thematic and narrative perspectives of rendering the principle of identity formation in twenty-first century: The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma, Three Brothers by Peter Ackroyd, A Strangeness in My Mind by Orhan Pamuk, and The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides. As for its theoretical and methodological trajectory, in the first chapter, this dissertation admits and employs the views of the Dutch School of metamodernism, represented by Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker. After showing how the newly emerging theory chronicles the decline of postmodern aesthetics and stimulates the emergence of metamodern sensibilities, our study provides an exhaustive historical-literary overview of the Bildungsroman from its ancient roots through its nineteenth century (also Victorian) flourishing to post-postmodernity with its metamodern transformation. This contemporary transformation is threefold encompassing neo-romanticism, neoliberalism, and post-irony. The framework of our study, therefore, would necessarily define the three subgenres emerging within metamodernity, each of which reconfigures the process of self-development through the interplay of the metamodern oscillatory dichotomies. This is accompanied in the subsequent chapters by practically focusing on four distinct novels, textually and contextually scrutinising their textualisation of the bildung. Consequently, the second chapter of this study explores the neo-romantic Bildungsroman by analysing two fictional works. The first part of the chapter focuses on The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma and discloses the neo-romantic identity formation of the protagonist Ben within a pattern of romantic theories. With specific references to Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, and Keats, our interpretation illustrates Ben's transformation into a metamodern, neoromantic persona with his growth influenced by recollection, fantasy, imagination, and a reawakened interest in romantic principles. The second part of this chapter delves into Three Brothers by Peter Ackroyd and examines the novel through the lenses of psychogeography and antiquarianism. Our approach discloses the ways in which urban environment, alongside recollection and individuality, influences the coming-of-age of three unique protagonists: Harry, who embodies a Byronic hero-villain persona; Daniel, whose formation serves as a metamodern Künstlerroman; and Sam, who appears as a neoromantic flâneur and a type of genius loci for Ackroyd's London. In the case of both novels, our analysis demonstrates how metamodernism adopts, adapts, and reinterprets the romantic heritage, which creates a neo-romantic version of the Bildungsroman that addresses both historical traditions and contemporary issues. Chapter Three examines the neoliberal Bildungsroman in A Strangeness in My Mind by Orhan Pamuk and explores the metamodern narratives of entrepreneurship. The emergence of an entrepreneurial self and the representation of the shift from postmodern neoliberalism to a metamodern, sincere capitalism is rendered as the process of Mevlut's identity formation, which is an experience in which a personal initiative and genuineness redefine market-influenced values. Chapter Four investigates the post-ironic Bildungsroman in The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides and traces the progression from postmodern irony to metamodern post-irony and the emergence of a new, post-postmodern sincerity, in which irony itself is transformed into a means of conveying new sincerity and genuine emotional expression. Finally, by juxtaposing the four studied literary works with their romantic and Victorian predecessors as well as some modern and postmodern methodologies, this dissertation illustrates that the metamodern Bildungsroman is not only a critique of the boundaries of postmodernism, but also reveals a revitalized cultural understanding of identity, authenticity, sincerity, and belonging. Through a contrastive comparative analysis, this research examines critically and theoretically the role of metamodernism in shaping and redefining the Bildungsroman, while also drawing attention to the ways in which the metamodern Bildungsroman diverges from its postmodern version. In this respect, in addition to showing the limitations of postmodernism in theorising and thematising the bildung, our study explores the narrative techniques and stylistic choices of the metamodern Bildungsroman, as well as shows the creative impact of postmodernity and its metamodernism on rendering identity formation in literature.
