Public places are areas where the social, cultural, and spatial interactions of urban life are concentrated. Local participants use public places in their daily routines for gathering, resting, socializing, and sustaining their daily lives. These forms of use demonstrate that public places are shaped not only by their physical characteristics but also by the local context, user needs, and perceptions. This thesis is structured on the assumption that the quality parameters of public spaces are shaped by locality and that the perception and emotional experiences of local users play a determining role in evaluating these parameters. The main aim of the study is to identify the physical and perceptual quality parameters with the perspective of locality and local perception through a multidimensional and holistic framework. Within the scope of this research, the Bursa Historical Bazaar and Inns District was selected. The district represents a historically continuous commercial and social centre with multi-layered historical, cultural, and spatial characteristics, strong identity components and actively used by local communities in daily life. The study is based on a hybrid methodological model integrating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Within this hybrid model, spatial analyses and perceptual analyses were conducted in an integrated manner. Spatial analyses include figure–ground analysis and space syntax analysis, which were used to examine spatial configuration, connectivity, and integration levels within the public space network. Perceptual analyses consist of cognitive mapping, the commented walk method, semi-structured in-depth interviews and physical quality analysis based on user reviews. Cognitive mapping is used to explore how local users mentally represent the district and which spaces occupy central positions within their spatial memory. Through these maps, it becomes possible to identify the nodes, landmarks, and routes that structure the collective image of the area. The commented walk method allows participants to articulate real-time perceptions while moving through space, thereby linking spatial experience to narrative expression. Semi-structured interviews further deepen the understanding of users' spatial memories, identity associations, sense of belonging, and everyday experiences within the district. Physical quality analysis based on user evaluations was used to analyze physical quality findings at the spatial level. These methods provide insight into the subjective dimension of spatial experience and reveal how locality is constructed through lived experience. In addition to these methods, AI-based Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) and content analysis were utilized to assess emotional responses during spatial experience. FER analysis was conducted to examine users' facial expressions during their interaction with space, while content analysis focused on verbal expressions and narratives collected throughout the research process. The integration of these methods constitutes the core of the proposed hybrid research model, enabling the simultaneous evaluation of spatial configuration, perceived meaning, and emotional response. The research findings indicate that both physical and perceptual quality parameters are prominent in the perception and evaluation of public spaces by local users. Among the physical quality parameters, activity diversity, the presence of different age and user groups, accessibility, spatial continuity, and climatic comfort were identified as determining factors. Perceptual quality parameters are identity, belonging, and image were found to be central components shaping local perception. The district is a symbolic urban core associated with memory, tradition, and collective identity. Spaces characterized by strong image and identity, historical continuity, and well physical conditions were more prominently represented in cognitive maps and more frequently mentioned in interviews. Conversely, spaces with low physical quality, limited visibility or weak maintenance were less represented in spatial memory. The perceptual analyses reveal that local users strongly identified the district with specific landmarks such as Koza Han, Ulu Mosque, and the Covered Bazaar. These places emerge as central elements within the collective spatial memory and were consistently associates with identity and belonging. However, the emotional state analyses produced a different pattern. Within the scope of facial emotion recognition analysis, it was observed that local users did not consistently reflect their emotional states through facial expressions. Instead, emotional responses were more clearly expressed verbally during interviews and commented walks. This finding suggests that emotional experience in historically layered public spaces is shaped by accumulated memory and personal associations rather than only immediate sensory stimuli. This outcome also highlights an important methodological implication: emotional assessment based solely on instantaneous facial expression data may not fully capture the complexity of spatial experience in culturally and historically embedded environments. The integration of verbal narratives with AI-based emotion analysis provided a more comprehensive understanding of user experience and demonstrated the importance of combining technological tools with qualitative interpretation. Overall, the study demonstrates that public space quality is shaped by local context. Spatial configuration, accessibility, and activity diversity influence patterns of use, while identity, memory, and belonging shape perception and evaluation. The Bursa Historical Bazaar and Inns District functions not only as a physical network of public spaces but also as a perceptual, emotional, and social network embedded within collective memory. The findings confirm that locality operates as a mediating framework through which spatial characteristics acquire meaning and value. Furthermore, the hybrid research model developed within this study offers a transferable and adaptable methodological framework for evaluating public spaces in different urban contexts. By integrating spatial analysis, perceptual evaluation, and emotional assessment, the model enables a multidimensional understanding of spatial quality that goes beyond purely physical evaluation. This approach contributes to the development of more user-oriented planning and design strategies by incorporating lived experience and local perception into decision-making processes. The findings emphasize that planning and urban design practices should consider locality as a fundamental component in assessing and improving public space quality. In conclusion, this study reveals that the quality of public spaces in a multi-layered manner through the concept of locality and examines the relationships between physical characteristics, user perception, memory, belonging, and emotional experience within a holistic framework. The developed hybrid methodological model that integrates spatial analysis, perceptual evaluation, and AI-supported emotional assessment, the study offers both conceptual and methodological contributions to planning and urban design literature. The model provides a user-oriented and multidimensional approach to evaluating public spaces and demonstrates the necessity of incorporating local context and lived experience into assessments of spatial quality. In this regard, the study contributes to the advancement of interdisciplinary methodologies and provides a comprehensive framework for future research and practice in the field of public space evaluation.
