The aim of this study was to investigate the time-dependent effects of different doses of menthol applied topically via spray on skeletal muscle strength performance and fatigue development at different angular velocities. This experimental laboratory study, involving single-group and repeated measurements, included 19 healthy male athletes (mean age 21.9±2.1) who exercised regularly at least 3 days a week. Participants' body height, body mass, and mid-thigh girth were measured; strength outputs were obtained at angular velocities (60°/s and 180°/s) determined by different menthol doses (basal 0% dose, 4.6% dose, 10% dose). Each session was performed at the same time of day and with at least 48 hours between tests using an isokinetic dynamometer (Isomed2000, Germany). Peak torque (PT), mean torque, torque/body weight ratio (T/BW), power, mean power, total work, time to reach PT, and fatigue index parameters of the quadriceps femoris muscle group were analyzed. Additionally, participants' thermal perception was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS). The obtained data were evaluated using a two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures for dose and time factors for each angular velocity. In the analysis of variance for the parameters, the following factors were found to be significant: time (p=0.000) and dose × time (p=0.006) for PT at 180°/s; dose (p=0.032) and time (p=0.006) for VAS scores at 60°/s; time (p=0.012) at 60°/s, and dose (p=0.000) and time (p=0.000) at 180°/s for average torque; time (p=0.042) at 60°/s, and time (p=0.000) and dose × time (p=0.004) at 180°/s for TVA; time (p=0.000) and dose × time (p=0.001) for power; time (p=0.000) for average power; dose (p=0.01) and time (p=0.000) for fatigue index; and time (p=0.007) and dose × time (p=0.045) at 60°/s, and time (p=0.000) and dose × time (p=0.018) at 180°/s for total work. Regarding the time to reach PT, no statistically significant difference was found between the times taken to reach peak torque output values for the two doses (P>0.05). Our research findings showed that menthol has no effect on PT production, but it may contribute to the sustainability of performance by delaying fatigue.
