Özet

Bu doktora tezi, çağdaş İngiliz tiyatrosunda ortaya çıkan ve hem ekolojik koşulların hem de korku kültürünün dramatik bir yansıması olarak okunabilecek yeni bir trajedi anlayışını tanımlamak amacıyla 'geotrajedi' kavramını önermektedir. Tezin temel iddiası, Antroposen çağında insan eyleminin Yer sistemi süreçleriyle ve insan olmayan etmenlerle iç içe geçtiği koşullarda klasik trajedi anlayışının yeniden yapılanmaya uğradığı ve bu yeniden yapılanmayı kavramak için tiyatroya özgü bir kavramsal çerçevenin gerekli olduğudur. Çalışma, Deleuze ve Guattari'nin jeofelsefe ve rizom kavramları, Bauman'ın akışkan modernlik kuramı, Füredi'nin korku kültürü çözümlemesi, Braidotti'nin posthümanist özne anlayışı, Moore'un Capitalocene yaklaşımı, Nixon'ın yavaş şiddet kavramı, Morton'ın hipernesne kuramı ve Žižek'in Lakancı çerçevesi gibi disiplinlerarası bir kuramsal bütünden yararlanmaktadır. Bu kuramsal çerçeve, Lucy Kirkwood'un The Children, Steve Waters'ın The Contingency Plan, Duncan Macmillan'ın Lungs ve Mike Bartlett'in Earthquakes in London adlı oyunlarının çözümlenmesinde uygulanmaktadır. Söz konusu oyunlar, geotrajedinin farklı dramaturjik ölçeklerde nasıl işlediğini göstermek üzere seçilmiştir: yakın aile içi alandan tarihsel zaman dilimlerine, kuşaklararası borçlardan kentsel afet senaryolarına uzanan bir yelpazede. Tezin bulguları, çağdaş İngiliz tiyatrosunun korku kültürü temalı oyunlardan Antroposen koşullarındaki yeni bir trajik anlayışa doğru belirgin bir geçiş gerçekleştirdiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Bu yeni anlayış, geri döndürülemezlik, ölçek uyumsuzluğu, gecikmiş sonuç ve dağılmış faillik gibi özelliklerle tanımlanmakta ve böylece klasik trajedinin ahlaki çerçevesini gezegensel bir düzleme taşımaktadır. Sonuç olarak geotrajedi kavramı, hem eleştirel bir araç hem de çağdaş dramaturji için yeni bir okuma anahtarı olarak işlev görmekte ve İngiliz tiyatrosunun yirmi birinci yüzyılın ekolojik koşulları altında nasıl yeniden biçimlendiğini anlamaya katkıda bulunmaktadır.

This doctoral dissertation proposes the concept of“geotragedy”so as to identify and theorise a distinctive tragic mode emerging in contemporary British theatre, one that may be read as a dramaturgical response to the conditions of ecological crisis and to the culture of fear that characterises the present moment. The central argument is that, under the conditions of the Anthropocene where human action is increasingly entangled with Earth-system processes and more-than-human forces, the classical understanding of tragedy undergoes a structural reorganisation, and that grasping this reorganisation requires a theatre-specific conceptual vocabulary that the existing categories of eco-theatre, climate-change drama, and political theatre do not fully provide. The study draws on an interdisciplinary theoretical framework that integrates Deleuze and Guattari's geophilosophy and rhizome, Bauman's account of liquid modernity, Füredi's analysis of the culture of fear, Braidotti's posthuman subject, Moore's Capitalocene, Nixon's slow violence, Morton's hyperobjects, and Žižek's Lacanian framework. This framework is then applied to the analysis of four contemporary British plays: Lucy Kirkwood's The Children, Steve Waters' The Contingency Plan, Duncan Macmillan's Lungs, and Mike Bartlett's Earthquakes in London. These plays are selected to demonstrate how geotragedy operates across distinct dramaturgical scales, ranging from the intimate domestic setting to long historical durations, from intergenerational debt to urban catastrophe scenarios. The findings of the dissertation suggest that contemporary British theatre is performing a significant transition from plays organised around the culture of fear to a new tragic mode shaped by Anthropocene conditions. This new mode is defined by irreversibility, scale-mismatch, delayed consequence, and distributed agency, and it relocates the moral horizon of classical tragedy onto a planetary plane. As a result, the concept of geotragedy functions both as a critical instrument and as a new reading key for contemporary dramaturgy, contributing to the understanding of how British theatre is being reshaped under the ecological conditions of the twenty-first century.
