IV ABSTRACT SHEAR STRENGTH AND DEFORMATION PROPERTIES OF RUBBER FIBER-KAOLINITE MIXTURE Low hydraulic conductivity clay layers are widely used in waste disposal facilities as basal liner and in the cover. Compacted clay layers have brittle behavior and under large deformations, formation of cracks cause detrimental increase in hydraulic conductivity. Addition of rubber fibers makes the compacted clay liner ductile. The hydraulic conductivity test results of compacted rubber fiber added clay liners have been investigated in previous research. However, the stress-strain properties and shear strength parameters are main object of this study. Shear strength and deformation properties of rubber-kaolinite samples were investigated. Unconfined compression, direct shear and triaxial tests were conducted on kaolinite and 10 per cent by weight rubber added samples. Global Lab image analysis software has also been used to observe the behavior of both kaolinite and rubber fiber-kaolinite mixtures and Poisson ratios were calculated using the measurements obtained. Addition of rubber increased the undrained shear strength of kaolinite and decreased the amount of cracks.
