Özet

11 ÖZET Dört dil becerisi içinde, 'okuma' hakkında; hemen her seviyede beceriyi geliştirmeyi hedefleyen çeşitli kitaplar rahatlıkla bulunabilir. Fakat bu kitapların bolluğu, bu çalışmanın hedef grubu olan ingiliz Dil Eğitimi bölümlerinin birinci sınıf birinci dönem öğrencileri için çok faydalı ve uygun olduğu anlamına gelmez. Gayet iyi bilinir ki; ideal bir okuma ders kitabı öğrencilerin ihtiyaç ve ilgilerine göre planlananıdır. İngiliz Dili Eğitimi bölümlerinin birinci sınıf birinci dönem öğrencileri ele alındığında görülüyor ki ders kitabı, okumanın alt becerilerini geliştirmeli ve uygun etkinliklerle orjinal metinler sunmalı. Ayrıca, motivasyon faktörü de özellikle metin seçimi safhasında göz ardı edilmemelidir. Bu çalışma, yukarıda belirtilen hususları gerçekleştirmeyi hedeflemektedir. Bu nedenle, öncelikle okumanın teorik bilgisi çalışıldı. Bunu takiben, müfredat programı çeşitleri incelendi ve bu iki konu literatür taraması kısmını oluşturdu. Daha sonra, öğrencilerin ve öğretmenlerin ihtiyaçlarını ve ilgilerini tayin etmek için bir ihtiyaç analizi uygulandı. 409 öğrenci ve 39 öğretmen veri toplamaya katkıda bulundu. Veri toplamada bir öğrenci anketi ve bir de öğretmen anketi kullanıldı. Bu anketlerin analizi Yöntem ve Tartışma isimli üçüncü bölümde açıklanmıştır. Sonunda, anket sonuçlarının ışığında, dördüncü bölümde İngiliz Dili Eğitimi bölümlerinin birinci sınıf birinci dönem öğrencileri için ileri seviyede bir okuma dersi müfredatı önerilmiştir. Bu önerilen ders müfredatı, öğrencilerin ve öğretmenlerin ilgi ve ihtiyaçlarına göre hazırlanmış on üniteden oluşmuştur. Öğretmeler için cevap anahtarı da bu bölümde belirtilmiştir, ilerki çalışmalar için öneriler ve de sonuç kısmı da son bölümü oluşturmaktadır.

Ill ABSTRACT Among the four skills of language 'reading' is perhaps the one about which various kinds of books aiming to develop the reading ability can be found at any level. However, the abundance of these books does not mean that they are all very beneficial and appropriate for the first year first semester students in ELT departments, which is the target group of this study. It is well-known that an ideal reading coursebook is the one which is designed according to the needs and interests of the learner. When the first year first semester students in ELT departments are concerned, it seems that the coursebook has to develop the subskills of reading, and present authentic texts with suitable activities. Furthermore, the motivation factor should not be ignored especially at the text selection stage. This study aims at realizing the issues mentioned above. For this reason, the theory of reading was studied primarily. Following this, the syllabus types have been examined, and these two issues have formed the literature review part of the study. Later, a needs analysis has been carried out in order to determine the needs and interests of both students and teachers. 409 students and 39 instructors have contributed to the data collection. In data collection, a students' questionnaire and a teacher's questionnaire have been used. The analysis of these questionnaires have been explained in the third chapter called Method and Discussion. At the end, in the light of the results of these questionnaires, an advanced reading course syllabus for the first year first semester students in ELT departments has been suggested in the fourth chapter. This suggested course syllabus consists of ten units which have been prepared according to the needs and interests of the students and teachers.
