ÖZET 342 VE 1454 YILLARI ARASINDA KONSTANTİNOPOLİS VE ÇEVRESİNDE MEYDANA GELEN DEPREMLERİN ETKİ VE SONUÇLARI Bu çalışma Bizans Impatatorluğu'nun başkenti Konstantinopolis şehrinin ve etrafındaki yerleşim birimlerinin, imparatorluğun varoluş süresi boyunca karşılaştığı depremlerin etki ve sonuçlarım analiz etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. İlk olarak kronik ve tarihçilerin 4-15. yüzyıllar arasındaki depremle ilgili verileri değerlendirilmiş; ikinci olarak insanların deprem karşısında gösterdikleri tepki ve buna ek olarak imparatorların ve kilisenin tavırları da irdelenmiştir. Tüm bu tanıcı bölümler Bizanslıların depremi nasıl algıladıkları konusunda bir arka plan teşkil etmektedir. Araştırmamızın asıl önemli kısmı olan depremlerin demografik, ekonomik ve sosyal etkileri, ulaşılabilir ana ve ikincil kaynaklar analiz edilerek yapılmıştır. Elimizdeki kaynakların yetersizliği sebebiyle bazen kesin verilerin elde edilmesinde güçlüklerle karşılaşılmış olmasına rağmen depremlerin etki ve sonuçlan ile ilgili bazı bilgilere ulaşılmıştır. Bu bilgiler depremlerin nüfusa, iaşe sistemine, ekonomiye, çevreye etkisiyle beraber devletin deprem karşısındaki politikası hakkında da bilgiler vermektedir.

IV ABSTRACT IMPACT AND CONSEQUENCES OF EARTHQUAKES IN BYZANTINE CONSTANTINOPLE AND ITS VICINITY, A.D. 342-1454 by Mevlüde Bakır This study attempts to analyze the impact and consequences of earthquakes which the city of Constantinople and its surrounding areas confronted throughout the existence of the Byzantine Empire. It first evaluates the accounts of the chroniclers and the historians between the fourth and the fifteenth centuries; it then deals with the Byzantine attitudes towards earthquakes as well as the people's reactions, imperial and the ecclesiastical responses. These introductory sections are intended to provide concrete background for an understanding of the Byzantine view of earthquakes. The most important concerns of this thesis are the demographic, economic and social consequences of earthquakes based on an analysis of the available primary and secondary sources. Despite the lack of concrete numeric data, the sources do offer valuable information on earthquakes and their consequences. These include the impact of earthquakes on population, food supply, the economy, the built environment and the state's policy regarding earthquakes.
